Many forms of Long Covid: Long Covid is a multisystemic disease with sequelae that affect almost all organ systems. Various putative mechanisms that underlie these sequelae are not mutually exclusive and may explain the myriad health effects seen in Long Covid. Therapeutics that target these pathways, such as antivirals, anti-inflammatory agents, microbiome restoration, and anticoagulant drugs, may ameliorate symptoms.

I find this sad. From Von Economo’s encephalopathy (made famous in Oliver Sacks “Awakenings”) after 1918 flu to 2003 H5N1 to the 2009 H1N1 swine flu, viruses seem to be the trigger for neurodegeneration. While not the only cause; to ignore their contribution to lose a whole entree to prevention.

If you are not closely following the recent discoveries, it is hard to understand how neuroscientists interpret SARSCoV2 damage to the brain. The figure below summarizes it well, it is a neurological disease. And we need help from other fields to understand it fully. #NeuroCovid shorturl.at/fs1En
Pioneering discovery and therapeutics at the brain-vascular-immune interface.
Integration of vascular risk factors with genetic susceptibility in neurological diseases. A wide range of vascular risk factors and comorbidities induce blood protein extravasation into the CNS, which is a common thread in neurological diseases with diverse etiologies that drive immune responses in the CNS. Vascular pathology, BBB disruption, toxic blood factors, and coagulation are interconnected with neuroinflammation and are shared mechanisms among diseases with diverse etiologies including MS, AD, COVID-19, stroke, and TBI. Genetic susceptibility and comorbidities point to immune and vascular origins of polygenic neurological diseases and additive interactions between genes and environment. Integrated experimental approaches to study the neurovascular interface can provide a unifying model of the environmental risk factors and genetic predispositions and reveal new therapeutic targets.
