We need most of those other forms of technology to exist in the world. We don’t need AI. It helps some people do their jobs a tiny bit better. Why the fuck are we building data centers for what is, at best, a minor improvement?

"creative" is an interesting choice of words here www.nytimes.com/2026/10/02/u...
The extraordinary move — holding back about one-fifth of the N.S.F.’s primary research budget — is the latest sign of how the Trump administration is finding creative ways to work around Congress. Lawmakers from both parties have consistently opposed White House-led proposals to cut funding to major science agencies, including the N.S.F. and the National Institutes of Health.

There are a lot of Trump officials who need to be impeached, but Russell Vought -- the quarterback of all the Project 2025 fuckery and a central player in the administration's overreach -- really needs to be at the top of the list.

My latest: Following Wednesday's failed bid by Senate Dems to block Trump's pocket rescission, Trump WH, once again, trampled over Congress’ power of the purse. Several experts point out their use of the “pocket rescissions” loophole is more an admission of guilt than a clever trick.

NYC gains nothing from waymo. Elsewhere, driverless rides may help us overcome the insidious psychology of driving and car ownership, that subconscious shoring up of security and identity that makes otherwise reasonable people hostile towards alternative transportation--maybe.

The article says about 15% of DRP roles have been replaced through a hire, with the admin claiming that figure is relatively small. I'd like to know what additional % of DRP-equivalent roles are still waiting for their job postings to be approved. Hiring's still very throttled at my agency.

A digital illustration in very comic book style. At the center is an 80s Punk/Mad Max/Tank Girl-type girl with bright red and yellow rough-cut hair, wearing a red cut up tee, lots of belts and a studded collar and bracelets etc, denim cutoffs over electric blue fishnets, and tall blue combat-type boots. In her hands she has a red chainsaw with a skull decoration on It that she's holding at the ready. There’s a bag slung over her shoulder with the handles of a baseball bat and a machete emerging from the top of it. She is reared back on one foot, having just delivered a tremendous kick to the head of a humanoid robot which is reeling backwards, face half smashed in and turned toward the viewer, arms stretched out, with flames and sparks shooting out of its neck. It's one of those retro-future streamline robot guys that you would maybe see Superman fight in a Fleischer cartoon. Behind on the left you can see from the waist up another such robot which has been dealt with similarly just before. Above and behind all this is jagged red lettering over a jagged yellow outline reading DESTROY next to dimensionalized sans-serif letters reading "A.I." (quotes included) over a 🚫 symbol. Under the reeling robot are some important anti-AI talking points rendered in rough maker-style hand lettering: 'Bad at Everything! Kill the Planet! Brain Atrophy!' I could go on but there's only so much space in one drawing. All of this has been worked up digitally to look like it's a vintage screen printed t-shirt design with cracked and worn plastisol inks. In conclusion, fuck your AI.

The NYC ban on "A.i." for 2K-8 is great, but we have to pay VERY CLOSE attention to the "A.i." tech the city will be pushing on high schoolers in these "pilot" programs. I have big questions about ALL of them. www.nyc.gov/mayors-offic...
Screenshot reading:

Pilot programs include:

Quill: Accessed by English language arts classrooms, Quill is designed to support close reading, text analysis and the use of evidence to support claims. Students will use Quill for no more than 15 minutes per week.
Edia: Accessed by math classrooms, Edia is designed to provide step-by-step coaching and prompt students to explain their reasoning. Students will use Edia for no more than 20 minutes per week.
Brisk Teaching: Accessed through teacher-created activities, Brisk Teaching is designed to provide guided practice using teacher-selected texts or videos, with objectives and guardrails set by the teacher. Students will use Brisk Boost for 10 to 20 minutes once or twice per week.
Playlab: To be used across multiple subjects, Playlab is designed to help students engage with assignment-specific applications and examine AI outputs for bias and reasoning. No more than two assignments per marking period will use Playlab.
Intel AI-Ready Schools: To be used across multiple subjects, Intel AI-Ready Schools is designed to help students identify community problems and develop AI solutions through semester-long projects. Students will use the tool for one period per week.

A digital illustration of Peter Finch portraying maniacal newscaster Howard Beale in Network (1976). He’s a disheveled older white man in a rumpled raincoat, his face is distended in an open-mouthed howl with both his hands held out in claw-like configurations in the air in front in him. There are clocks on the wall behind him and some of the numbers have been replaced with letters spelling out ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

In an inset frame on a deep purple background is a digital straight lift of a Patrick Nagel painting with all the hallmarks, a 3/4 profile of an alabaster-skinned lady looking back at the viewer. He has a short, shiny black, sexy business lady hairstyle, maroon lipstick, darkly outlined pale colored eyes, a big blue, triangular earring, and she’s wearing a sort of gray jacket over a matching camisole type thing, with a ribbon around her neck of the same gray. The background is flat panels of pale blue, lighter gray, and deeper maroon. Some laser-like lines curved over the design casting shadows. Above and below the inset is very 80s tracked-out sans-serif type saying [above] ‘MAYBE’ and [below] ‘IT WILL HAPPEN’. And then at the very bottom set against a big, hot-pink brushstroke shape with a drop shadow is the word ‘TODAY’ done in slashy purple brushstroke lines that are casting a darker pink drop shadow onto the previously mentioned pink brushstroke. The 80s man. Nothing like it.

A cartoon alligator drawn with digital colored pencils. He’s lying on his back with his head propped up by one gator paw and his tail curving back around so he’s basically in an S-shaped configuration. His mouth is open and there are two little brown birds – one on his snoot and one inside – cleaning him, which might not be a thing alligators and birds specifically do but I didn’t look it up. There’s a red alarm clock on the gator’s tummy and he’s wearing a yellow t-shirt that has blue writing on it reading ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

A digital poster in the style of a World War II propaganda piece. Isolaed on a yellow background, a normal, squarish, 20-something guy with glasses is sitting working on a laptop. A ghostly figure of Hitler has his arm around the guy and is grinning and shaking a fist triumphantly looking at the laptop screen. On the lid of the laptop where an apple might otherwise be is an openAI logo, bright green, and dripping green ooze down the lid. Text on the poster, in combinations of sans-serif type and brush script reads:
Using Generative AI?
You’re prompting with Hitler!
GenAI is a Fascist Project!
Try using your brain instead
Don’t surrender your creativity to the tech billionaire’s control

It's conference season, so I wanted to share the AI refusal statement I put at the end of my presentations and book talks. Feel free to use it!
AI Refusal Statement
I did not use generative AI at any point in the production of this book or presentation, including the literature review, writing, editing, translation, organization, or any other task (e.g. brainstorming). To the extent that it is possible to know, I did not cite any studies that used generative AI.
Justification: GenAI technology is based on stolen labor, anti-solidarity between workers, class exploitation, structural racism, misogyny, environmental injustice, and climate destabilization.
