inktober day 5: smack. only that's too hard to draw so here's SMAC instead
A cartoon of Prokhor Zakharov from the game Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. He is a hippie-looking guy, clean-shaven with long unkempt hair and big round glasses. He's wearing a black turtleneck and some sort of scifi headset and says "Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk"A cartoon of Corazón Santiago from the game Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. She is a severe-looking woman with high cheekbones and a square jaw. She wears camo fatigues, an ammo belt across her chest, and has a tight hairdo with a ponytail hanging down behind her right shoulder. She scowls at the viewer and says "Pathetic"A cartoon of Sheng-Ji Yang from the game Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. He is an older Chinese man, clean shaven with receding white hair cropped short and big ears. He smirks, one eyebrow cocked, and says "Apologies, my friend. It's just that as an INTJ, these illogical actions of yours... well, I find them to be amusing."

Hate it when you see what you think is a cool bird and you look it up later and it’s called like the Common Dumb Asshole. “Birders throughout history have hated its guts. It can’t even fly right.” I thought I saw an interesting guy.

shirley jackson you tell em www.newyorker.com/books/page-t...
ar and away the greatest menace to the writer—any writer, beginning or otherwise
—is the reader. The reader is, after all, a kind of silent partner in this whole business of writing, and a work of fiction is surely incomplete if it is never read. The reader is, in fact, the writer's only unrelenting, genuine enemy. He has everything on his side; all he has to do, after all, is shut his eyes, and any work of fiction becomes meaningless. Moreover, a reader has an advantage over a beginning writer in not being a beginning reader; before he takes up a story to read it, he can be presumed to have read everything from Shakespeare to Jack Kerouac. No matter whether he reads a story in manuscript as a great personal favor, or opens a magazine, or—kindest of all—goes into a bookstore and pays good money for a book, he is still an enemy to be defeated with any kind of dirty fighting that comes to the writer's mind.

one of many annoying things about the death of local journalism is that it's really hard to find out what's going on. i want to know why there are helicopters everywhere but every story is either TEEN JAILED IN SICK JOY RIDE JAUNT or LOCAL VILLAGE "NICE", SAY RESIDENTS

Yeah, I think it's notable that serial killer protagonists (even as antiheroes) are much rarer than hitman protagonists; it's easier to identify with the hitman, imo, as "I hate my awful job but I'm just too damn good at it" taken to a dramatic extreme

I think the amorality may be part of the appeal too; many people feel morally compromised by their jobs or just their lives, and there is a kind of fantasy in the idea of being able to just turn that nagging conscience off (until, in the better hitman stories, it becomes impossible to ignore)

Algunas correciones pequeñas: Cuando usas "a" y "el" juntos, siempre se convierten en una palabra "al"; por ejemplo, "vender tu bonos al mercado". Es lo mismo con "del" (de + el). Además, "have to" = "tener que". "Que" tiene que seguir "tener"(!)

this is why I highly recommend getting a teacher if you can find one, bc they can give you a lot of really helpful context like "oh, this word is correct but you only see it in literature" or "this is common in Latin America but not so much in Spain" or "you could say that but it would sound weird"
