ai—by which I mean a fairly broad set of technologies based around pattern recognition—may have a future as a specialized tool for niche analysis. generative ai is basically all garbage, resource intensive, and accessible now largely due to VC bucks subsidizing it in hopes of a business model

meme of guy looking at girl walking past while his actual gf looks at him angrily. the guy is "The West", his gf is "China Does Something Right," and the other girl is "But at what cost?"

beneath the meme are various screenshots of headlines that basically say "chinda did something good, but at what cost?"

Disney bought Fox in 2019 so they could compete with Netflix. Since then they have laid off at least 7000 people, jacked up prices, repeatedly introduced ads until they're on every tier, and only last year turned their first streaming profit. The mergers haven't been good for anyone.

GPT-4 was accompanied by fear of imminent job loss, and Altman predicted 100 million jobs lost due to GPT-5. And GPT-5 was pushed back several times, but the predictions/vague allusions/not-so-vague allusions didn't stop. Plenty of genuine fear preceding that release too.

y'all
Pre-training: The accused LLMs contain billions of parameters (weights) used to generate
outputs (responses) to inputs (queries or prompts) one token (i.e., a word or word part) at a time.
SF847. These LLMs generate outputs by predicting the next word that is likely to follow an input
text based on the similarity of the input to text used to train the model. SF1040. During pre-training,
OpenAI passed millions of copies of Plaintiffs’ articles through the model. SF849. As a result, the
models have encoded specific text from those articles in their parameters (a process called
“memorization”) that the models can output verbatim or near-verbatim (“regurgitation”). SF925-
26. OpenAI’s training sets did not include Plaintiffs’ copyright management information because
OpenAI systematically removed it before training. SF1136-138, 1300-04, 1363-1421.
