Don't you see / It's all we can do? John Ashbery
JOHN ASHBERY

RAIN MOVING IN

The blackboard is erased in the attic
And the wind turns up the light of the stars,
Sinewy now. Someone will find out, someone will know.
And if somewhere on this great planet
The truth is discovered, a patch of it, dried, glazed by the sun,
It will just hang on, in its own infamy, humility. No one
Will be better for it, but things can't get any worse.
Just keep playing, mastering as you do the step
Into disorder this one meant. Don't you see
It's all we can do? Meanwhile, great fires
Arise, as of haystacks aflame. The dial has been set
And that's ominous, but all your graciousness in living
Conspires with it, now that this is our home:
A place to be from, and have people ask about.

Book recommendation request! What’s a book that you really enjoyed and that taught you something new? I don‘t want to feel called to action or to have to grapple with the past or the future. Just like, wow I didn’t know anything about this and now I do and it was fun learning it…

Irish poet & author Eavan Boland: a foremost female voice in Irish #literature. She redefined the role of women in national literature, moving them from passive, romanticized muses to active, complex human subjects. Recipient, Lannan Literary Award for #Poetry. Born #OTD in 1944. #LitSky
A black-and-white portrait of Eavan Aisling Boland (1944–2020), the revered Irish poet and author who fundamentally reshaped national literature by subverting traditional, idealized depictions of women to center their lived, complex realities. Boland is captured in a gentle three-quarter profile, tilting her head slightly upward and looking just past the camera. Her expression is warm, thoughtful, and serene, highlighted by a genuine, open smile. Her dark hair is styled in a voluminous, layered chin-length cut with soft curls that frame her forehead. She is dressed in a dark, structured blazer or coat layered over a buttoned blouse, accessorized with a classic, dark beaded strand necklace. The background features a softly blurred, natural outdoor setting where dappled sunlight filters through overhead foliage, creating a gentle bokeh effect. The composition utilizes high-contrast monochrome tones, capturing crisp detail on her facial features and clothing while maintaining a soft, luminous quality in the lighting. The overall mood is deeply dignified, approachable, and creative, reflecting her towering historical legacy as a foundational pioneer of modern Irish poetry.

French marine biologist Jeanne Villepreux-Power invented the first glass aquarium for scientific study in 1832. Her sealed tanks (with aeration & water stability) enabled live observation of sea creatures, which was revolutionary in marine research. She was born #OTD in 1794. #WomenInSTEM
Sepia-toned 1861 photograph by André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri of Jeanne Villepreux-Power (1794–1871), pioneering French marine biologist and inventor of the glass aquarium. She stands in three-quarter profile facing left, leaning elegantly on a tall decorative pedestal vase adorned with flowers. She wears a formal Victorian gown with a fitted bodice of intricate black lace over dark fabric, long lace sleeves, and a voluminous hoop-skirted skirt. Her dark hair is styled in a low chignon, and she gazes thoughtfully to the side in a studio setting with a neutral backdrop.

Susan La Flesche Picotte: the first #NativeAmerican woman to earn a medical degree in the US. Living in an era when Native Americans were denied citizenship & women couldn't vote, she became an indispensable physician & fierce defender of her people's sovereignty. Died #OTD in 1915. #WomenInSTEM 🧵
A black-and-white studio portrait of Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte (1865–1915), the historic reformer celebrated as the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. In a bust-up composition against a dark, textured backdrop, she is positioned slightly turned to the side while facing the camera directly. She looks forward with an intelligent, steady, and composed expression, her dark hair neatly swept up away from her face into a soft bun. She wears a Victorian-era garment featuring a high-necked collar made of a contrasting, intricately patterned light fabric with fine floral or geometric motifs. This collared section is framed by a square, dark lace trim on her darker, structured bodice, which has modest pleating and slight puffing at the shoulders. The soft studio lighting emphasizes her prominent cheekbones and the calm, dignified mood of the portrait, embodying her historic legacy as an enduring pioneer of Indigenous health and civil rights.
