Zij vertelde dat Jerzy met zijn kampnummer 8830 erachter kwam dat hij de negende was met dat nummer. Alle 8830’s vóór hem waren om acht verschillende redenen overleden/vermoord. Dit verhaal greep één van haar leerlingen zo aan dat zij bij Nederlands het volgende rake (!) gedicht schreef.

Vanmiddag hebben de 10 docenten ons rondgeleid door Majdanek aan de hand van het boek van Jerzy Kwiatkowski. Zij deden dat allen uitstekend en elk op hun eigen manier. Zo kregen wij een goed beeld van 485 dagen Majdanek. Eén gedicht viel op. Een docent had in haar klas verteld over haar presentatie.

Zojuist hebben we Belzec bezocht. Het 1e operationele vernietigingskamp van Aktion Reinhard: indrukwekkend, staalhard en massief. Ter contrast: daar las een deelneemster een pijnlijk liefdevol menselijke afscheidsbrief van een moeder aan haar zoon voor. Sara wordt in juli 1942 in Belzec vermoord.

Maandag stond in het teken van doorgangsgetto’s, bijv. Izbica. Dat waren open getto’s in Oost-Polen waar o.a. Duitse Joden naartoe werden gedeporteerd. De huizen stonden leeg, want de Poolse Joden waren ondertussen vermoord in Belzec. In deze getto’s was het ‘één trein eruit, één trein erin’…

Like so often with transports like this, there were many whole families on the train. One of the families on this train was the family Abas, from Amsterdam; Alfred (38), Jeannette (42) and their 2 sons Willy (14) and Rudolf (12). They were all murdered in the gas chamber on arrival at Sobibor.
