Great to collaborate with colleagues in Ethiopia. A decentralised HBV programme achieved some good on-treatment results but half of patients lost to follow up. We need to work out how to better engage and retain patients in care. #idsky #hepsky www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Published today. We found that hepatitis B was the leading cause of cirrhosis and HCC in southern Malawi. HCC is diagnosed at a very late stage. Huge opportunity to prevent liver-related death with community hepatitis B test and treat programmes. #hepsky #idsky www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

For the past 21 years the U.S. through PEPFAR has:  👉 Enabled 5.5 million babies to be born HIV-free 👉 Provided 20 million people with lifesaving HIV treatment 👉 Supported 7 million orphans and vulnerable children. Ending this support will end lives. #SaveHIVFunding www.unaids.org/en/topic/PEP...
If PEPFAR were permanently halted UNAIDS estimates that there would be approximately
6.3 million more AIDS related deaths
3.4 million AIDS orphans
8.7 million new HIV adult infections

Extraordinarily cruel People will get sick Drug resistance will spike It sounds as if PEPFAR could be terminated (not just “paused”) Until now, PEPFAR enjoyed bipartisan support & has arguably been one of the most effective bilateral health aid programs ever www.nytimes.com/2025/01/27/h...

PEPFAR’s computer systems also are being taken offline, a sign that the program may not return, as Republican critics had hoped.

31 December 1995. Still the perfect goodbye.
The final Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. The entire page is mostly white as they're in the winter snow. The pair is walking with a sledge, nicely duffled in in scarves, hats, gloves. Calvin delightedly exclaims 'wow, it really snowed las night! Isn't it wonderful?'. Hobbes follows up with 'Everything familiar has disappeared! The world looks brand-new!' -- A new year... a fresh, clean start!' adds Calvin. As they look over the landscape, Hobbes observes 'it's like having a big white sheet of paper to draw on!' -- 'A day full of possibilities!' Calvin affirms. They get ready on their sledge and Calvin tells his friend 'it's a magical world, Hobbes, ol' buddy... let's go exploring!', and the pair sledges off into the wintery landscape.

In most places in the world, power from new renewables is now cheaper than power from new fossil fuels. Why did renewables become so cheap so fast? The answer: learning curves.

We often worry about the wrong things. People killed annually by Sharks 10 Elephants 100 Hippos 500 Snails 10,000 Dogs 25,000 Snakes 50,000 People 475,000 Mosquitoes 725,000 🧪
This graphic, created for Bill Gates' website, shows that diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are responsible for vastly more human deaths than other animals. While sharks inspire fear in many, they kill few people.
