have you seen any memes in the past few years joking about wanting to be small woodland creatures? after i’d seen a few dozen i started to get curious about why that seemed so appealing to us these days. i wrote about the phenomenon, which i’ve dubbed FROGPOSTING, for @hazlitt.bsky.social

made some pullquote graphics for the book, like all the Cool Authors do
A quote from my forthcoming book, Post-Man (my name and the title are bottom left). At the top, dark text on turquoise-ish background: "As a child, my faith led, before long, to philosophical inquiry. I remember grappling with the idea that it was impossible not to sin, probably around the age of ten or eleven. What if I was really, really dedicated, though?" In white below it to the right, the name of the essay: EGO SVM LVX MVNDI with a portion of the cover design featuring a bobby pin, bottom rightA quote from my forthcoming book, Post-Man (my name and the title are bottom left). At the top, dark text on turquoise-ish background: "I felt like a bad gay. How bound up in shame and otherness I was, that Pride itself felt alienating. And yet Halloween, in many ways its vibe apogee, I was equally repelled by, a spinning magnet caught between two forms of queerness I could not manage to hack." At the top, dark text on turquoise-ish background: "To have a body, to be alive, is to be subject to capitalism. It touches us before we even come out, a probing finger, a bias that shapes an argument, a framework that demarcates what is and isn’t possible. Casualties of the conditions in which their mothers lived." Whenever two or more gather in my name, I am there. It may not have been spoken aloud, acted on, or acknowledged, but it was there, the way queerness has always been, uninvited yet irrepressible.." I'm really glad that Code Switch included this part of my interview, because I think these are the points that so often get lost in the discussion of trans panic and why the WNBA might be an ideal target for those anti-trans groups to latch onto. www.npr.org/2026/09/15/n...
We're talking about actual bigotry and the belief that this group of people shouldn't have, like, the same human rights as another group. It legitimizes them. And so the WNBA is a big platform for them to be able to do that. But I think what's actually really insidious about being the target is that transphobia is rooted in white supremacist ideas of who is allowed to be a woman and what a woman should look like. Those beliefs have, you know, negatively impacted Black and brown and non-Western women throughout history.

So what you have is a league in the WNBA that is full of Black women, 7-foot-tall women, masculine women, women who don't fit kind of the traditional markers of conventional white Western ideas of womanhood. And so I don't think it's surprising that transphobic ideas around the acceptable kind of woman are coming and impacting this league.

And I think the last piece that I will say is, I think, in some ways, the lack of visibility that the league had for a lot of years really protected it. Like, it wasn't as successful as it should have been because of racism and homophobia and misogyny. And once it becomes successful, the flip side of that is it really does become a different kind of victim of those ideas. And the fact that you have a league that is all women, predominantly Black women, largely queer women who have been successful and they don't need men to do it, and their product is not necessarily for men. I think that's a threat to the status quo. And so it's not just about protecting women's sports. It's actually about dismantling them from the inside.

idk if this kind of thing is interesting to you at all but i wrote an essay that referenced it and then put it in a book last year!
cropped photo of a book page. visible text reads: In the Trump era, one of my favourite pieces of internet culture is "Mister Gotcha," a webcomic strip by Matt Bors featuring a run-of-the-mill white Twitter guy popping up throughout history to critique those agitating for change. The comic reaches its apex—and punchline-with the orange-T-shirt-clad jerk popping out of a well to respond to an emaciated medieval serf's complaint that "We should improve society somewhat." On cue, the smirking reply comes: "And yet you participate in society. Curious! I am very intelligent."
The underlying logic perfectly captures the trap of existence: We are all—

HEATED RIVALRY for realz: CUTTING EDGE by Daniel Gawthrop is a fascinating and timely examination of ice hockey through a queer lens. arsenalpulp.com/Books/C/Cutt...
The cover of the book “Cutting Edge: Hockey as Queer Culture” by Daniel Gawthrop. Stacked text above reads, “Happy book birthday,” along with the book's title and subtitle and the author's name. Below, footer text lists the publisher, Arsenal Pulp Press, and their website, arsenal pulp [dot] com. The painted abstract background is pale purple and has the publisher’s logomark (a circle with an off-centre jagged cross cut through) in the top-right.

On the book cover, the silhouettes of two hockey players holding hockey sticks face each other, with one player on the upper right-hand side and the other player on the lower left-hand side, on a dark purple background. The silhouettes have a gradient of green, blue, and light purple. The title and subtitle, “Cutting Edge: Hockey as Queer Culture,” appear in the top left corner. The author’s name, “Daniel Gawthrop,” appears in the bottom right corner. Below the player on the right is text that reads, “An incredibly timely and personal examination of hockey at its cultural crossroads. —Ren Dawe, You Can Play.”The background continues from the first slide, with a photograph of the author, Daniel Gawthrop, taken by Trevor MacNeil. A small caption lists the author’s and photographer’s names.

Questionnaire
by Wendell Berry 1. How much poison are you willing to eat for
the success of the free market and global trade?
Please name your preferred poisons. 2. For the sake of goodness, how much evil are
you willing to do? Fill in the following blanks with the names of

would most willingly destroy. 4. In the name of patriotism and the flag, how much of our beloved land are you willing to desecrate? List in the following spaces the mountains, rivers, towns, farms you could most
readily do without. 5. State briefly the ideas, ideals, or hopes, the energy sources, the kinds of security, for which you would kill a child. Name, please, the
