Is that underperformance taking into account the low funding? I wonder how much has been spent on that question in comparison to subquestions in other better funded disciplines

The great advantage of maps is that you have a better sense of what else is near to your route that might be worth a detour. Now car travel is much more like being in a kind of tunnel

I’m expecting many readers to opt only for novels written before 2024. Constantly wondering if a particular phrase was AI generated interrupts the enjoyment of reading. Sadly the only way to guarantee against this is to read stuff written before the tech existed www.ft.com/content/f100...

Did AI write this? It’s getting harder to tell
Detection software offers quick answers, but the risk of false positives and the stigma of being accused are leading to societal mistrust in the written word

Elster on adaptive preference is relevant too, he says it's a good sign if you have some desires for the impossible as it's evidence you haven't adapted

As I recall, Blackburn says that inconsistent desires are irrational for this reason, since you can't satisfy both. Some discussion early in my desire-as-belief book where I say conflicting desires are rational.

A little but not much. I would say the issues are very similar and the toxin puzzle, while about intention, would be a helpful model for a case. I could probably dig out a reference or two if you are very interested!

The questions are exciting because they are big. But answering them requires focusing on small parts, not the whole.

One of the best bits in Orwell's advice on writing is to think carefully about the metaphors you deploy and whether they actually work in context or have become dead things you repeat just because they are familiar.

A common mistake i see in online AI discourse is the framing: well, what makes you think they *aren't* conscious? It's a mistake because it puts the burden of proof on the wrong side; the question for AI's (or really anything) is: why should we think it *is* conscious?

And the thought is that functional roles can't work through external things? Just checking I understand the last thought

Only the same functional profile if you individuate functions in the right sort of way, I think. Also, and related: your belief but not theirs might constitute knowledge. (Despite all this of course I agree that there is something constant across the two cases)

That seems right though "the present" seems context sensitively stretchy enough to sometimes count two events as both present even if there is a small lag, I'd think

Some views value autonomy in the sense of agents having many options. On some such views there will be a point where the enormous value of *many* options would outweigh the disvalue of any bad option they might choose. (I believe Dworkin presents something like this as a reductio!)
