I’m expecting many readers to opt only for novels written before 2024. Constantly wondering if a particular phrase was AI generated interrupts the enjoyment of reading. Sadly the only way to guarantee against this is to read stuff written before the tech existed www.ft.com/content/f100...

Did AI write this? It’s getting harder to tell
Detection software offers quick answers, but the risk of false positives and the stigma of being accused are leading to societal mistrust in the written word

One of the best bits in Orwell's advice on writing is to think carefully about the metaphors you deploy and whether they actually work in context or have become dead things you repeat just because they are familiar.

A common mistake i see in online AI discourse is the framing: well, what makes you think they *aren't* conscious? It's a mistake because it puts the burden of proof on the wrong side; the question for AI's (or really anything) is: why should we think it *is* conscious?

What do you learn at university? 1. The difference between considering an idea for purposes of evaluation and advocating it. 2. The distinction between evaluating an idea and evaluating the person who proposes it. 3. The tension between ‘big picture’ and ‘fine-grain’. Skills, not (only) facts

I have a personal bias in favour of numbered sections. I think that they make cross-references easier and, more importantly, they make it possible to univocally identify citations when citing from a book/an e-book/a not yet laid out version of the same book. Page numbers are much less reliable.
