A friend of mine asked, "Should I tell employers about my disability?" She has seizures and a cognitive delay, so it takes her an extra time to process information. I confirmed, "Definitely stay silent until you're hired." Theoretically, the declaration protects you. THEN AGAIN, LOL NO IT DOESN'T.

I don’t think many nondisabled people realize that laws mandating accommodations are purposefully weak. Your employer gets to decide what an “undue burden” is. They hardly ever get called to account anyway, but if they do, they can cry about money or work hours or pretty much anything they like.

A good rule of thumb: If the press release (or stenographic news reporting masquerading as journalism) says that an "AI" did something, that's deliberate obfuscation. Software doesn't do anything of its own accord, but folks sure like to talk about it as if it does: >>

I love #WriteTheDocs. It’s rare to find a conference where every talk has something valuable, and you feel split between attending the talks (which are recorded so you can go back), going to the unconference (still structured, but with unique topics and conversation), and time to gab with friends.

We (humans) cannot separate ourselves from our creations. Anyone wishing to do so wants to negate their responsibilities for their own poor choices.

The first time I saw Rocky Horror I was 5—far too young to understand anything that happened. It started a life long love for Tim Curry. I know he didn’t particularly love stranger’s obsession with him, a separate human from his characters. But it’s hard not to gravitate towards that voice.

Many folks (incl. colleagues) are frozen in discovery, hoping to find it in delivery. We aren't identifying problems to solve, while offering tools we call "solutions." There's mass decision paralysis as everyone fights to be first to "win AI," but the end goal isn't clearly based in human needs.

In the end, if we let AI "solve" accessibility as a side effect, we're basically saying that disabled people's needs were never enough on their own. Accessibility is a civil right, not a byproduct. #Accessibility #AI

Last week, at the @developer.chrome.com panel on the evolution of the web and web development, an audience member asked about built-in AI. I was in the front row and I had the answer, so I responded from the audience. Following a second question, our stage manager asked me to get mic'd up and join.

The problem with being a person who is good at something like content operations, is that if I do my job well, everything runs smoothly and my work is invisible. I'm not particularly career-minded, and just like things to be good, but I wish for this type of impact was more valued.

This is the biggest problem, too, in internal requirements to use AI tools. We actually need to effectively and efficiently do our jobs, and requiring a tool to do that isn't the answer. Trust the employee to do what's best for their own work. Force slows us down.

I participate in the "AI as a catch-all" language problem. For example, this series focuses building tests for subjective outputs, a primary creation of generative AI. It's a terrific series (as @maudnals.bsky.social is a brilliant teacher) that matters because of the different of types of AI.

Alexandra Klepper @alexandrascript.com · 22/04/2026
People don't understand what AI is--that's unintentional and intentional consequences of marketing. Tech companies have used traditional machine learning for decades. Generative AI is a specific beast that should be named to help people understand the difference.

I went to the ER for the first time while in Athens. While I haven't been in NY, I *know* that being in-and-out in 3 hours having seen the literal specialist who needed to see me and actions for care would just never happen. And don't get me started on the cost.

@anildash.com clearly identifies this dissonance between the billions spent on AI and the mass chaos in tech. I'm exhausted, as are many friends and colleagues. All we can do is take control of what we can, acknowledging that our power may be limited, but we can do *something*.

This feels like fears of voter fraud. People are furious about a threat of others taking advantage of a system, when in reality, the threat only exists so those in power can build hateful, racist policies. Since COVID, the number of people with disabilities has grown an amount we cannot understand.

Today marks 7 years at Google. I was shocked to get a response to my application, shocked they wanted an interview, then devastated I was offered a position requiring me to take a 20% salary cut. It took 4 more months to get a new offer, another 4 to start. In total, the process was 13 months. (1/2)
