Too many people assume that every protagonist is just a stand in for the author, and that their bad deeds are what the author thinks are good. Those people are wrong, and any attempt to appease them will not win them over. They don't want to be won over. They want to be angry and right.

this feels like the crux of things, and I don't see it highlighted enough: being creative is fun! i want a machine that does my laundry so i can focus more on making art, not the other way around!!

**gently grabs your face** Listen, the world is full of so many horrors--things out of our direct control. We do what we can, as we can. But there's no magick button labeled Fix This Now. It's important to reach toward joy. Take your meds. Have a snack. Make plans. Laugh. Look at the damn moon.

on this point I will not be subtle. JK Rowling is a bigot monster actively harming my community with the money from her work. Harry Potter is full of barely-veiled bigotry itself and is outclassed by so many other stories. including mine. I am confident my books are better than Joanne's.

I also recommend if possible to find whatever humor you can. Make fun of these people. Lampooning them doesn’t discount the seriousness of their actions or the destruction of their works - it undermines their power and status and names, and lightens the soul www.wheresyoured.at/make-fun-of-...
I know some of you might read this and say "these people can't be stupid! These people run companies! They make huge deals! They read all these books!" and my answer is that some of the stupidest people I've ever met have read more books than you or I will read in a lifetime. While they might be smart when it comes to corporate chess moves or saying "this product category should do this," none of these men - not Altman, Pichai or Nadella - actually has a hand in the design or creation of any of the things their companies make, and they never, ever have.
Regardless, I have a larger point: it's time to start mocking these people and tearing down their legends as geniuses of industry. They are not better than us, nor are they responsible for anything that their companies build other than the share price (which is a meaningless figure) and the accumulation of power and resources.
These men are neither smart nor intellectually superior, and it's time to start treating them as such.

Very disappointed in the new Nebula Award eligibility information from SFWA that allows partially-generated works to be on the ballot. See 9.11.2. www.sfwa.org/complete-neb... This shouldn't be difficult. #noAI
11 In order to be eligible for any award, the work must include at least one (1) credited writer.
Works that are wholly written using generative large language model (LLM) tools are not eligible.
Works that used LLMs at any point during the writing process must disclose this upon acceptance of the nomination, and the nature of the technology’s use will be made clear to voters on the final ballot.

beating a dead horse but part of what makes art both worthwhile to the creator of it and interesting to the beholder is that you can’t actually beam ideas from your head into exactly what you imagined that way when you make it yourself, and the left turns and fingerprints are all part of it

Getting a story written to submit to a magazine was a super satisfying feeling, one I wish I had figuring my life out enough to make happen much sooner. But despite the life delay, getting to write alongside friends doing the same, beta reading for each other felt great. Need to do more of it. 😊

Today on the site I'm delighted to give a peek inside This is How We Roll ed. by Rosiee Thor, a YA anthology out today that features queer stories about tabletop games! Here's the gist: The magic of tabletop RPGs lives in the creativity of the players. Given the chance to explore gender, relationships, and queer existence across vast worlds with completely different sets of rules, queer players throughout the years have found acceptance, camaraderie, and joy by rolling the dice and kicking ass.

If you write ‘unalive’ in prose or character dialogue, in your NOVEL - which I have seen TWICE NOW - I will immediately wince and full body cringe. The TikTokification of words has to stop. Your character almost DIED or was KILLED in your novel. They were not almost ‘unalived’.
