Today is Canada's Day of Truth and Reconciliation. It is not a day to celebrate. It is a day to listen. A day to recognize the costs of colonialism and capitalism.

The end of autumn (Koto-in 高桐院). Taken on November 27, 2010 Kyoto-shi, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Photography by Damien Douxchamps on Flickr
A breathtaking, symmetrical view of a stone pathway engulfed in vibrant autumn foliage at a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji in Kyoto, Japan. The composition is strongly anchored by a long, narrow path constructed from irregular, dark gray flagstones bordered by straight, smooth granite stone edges, stretching from the bottom center directly toward the distant background. Flanking this stone pathway are low, parallel handrails made of light-colored, natural bamboo poles supported by short, dark wooden posts. The ground on either side of the path is completely blanketed in a thick, dense carpet of fallen momiji (Japanese maple) leaves, creating a sea of intense crimson, fiery orange, and deep reddish-gold hues that bleed onto the edges of the stone path itself. Thick, manicured green hedges run parallel to the path just behind the leaf-strewn ground, serving as a vibrant, dark green boundary that contrasts sharply with the red floor. Rising above the hedges, a dense grove of slender trees arches over the scene, their trunks framing the path. While the trees closest to the viewer retain deep green leaves, the canopy further down the path erupts into brilliant shades of yellow, gold, and orange where the sunlight filters through, creating a luminous, glowing tunnel effect at the far end of the walkway. The perspective draws the viewer’s eye deep into the forest toward a gentle bend where the bamboo railing turns out of sight. The lighting is soft and diffused, casting gentle shadows that accentuate the wet texture of the stones and the intricate shapes of the individual star-shaped maple leaves scattered across the ground. The overall atmosphere is one of serene, melancholic beauty, perfectly encapsulating the fleeting essence of late autumn in a traditional Japanese garden setting.
