We're in the midst of a massive crisis of epistemic authority and social trust, with much of the online information ecosystem basically collapsing into an algorithmic swirl of unverifiable rumour, and Wikipedia is one of the few institutions holding out. Attacking it is stupid and irresponsible.

Vaping could save millions of lives. The reason people hate it is because it is pleasurable, and some innate puritan part of their brain insists that quitting smoking should involve suffering iandunt.substack.com/p/lost-in-th...

Lost in the cloud: How vaping was undermined by a moral panic
New data shows that vaping is by far the most effective way to stop people smoking. It’s about time we acclimatise ourselves to the evidence.

That was a fantastic World Cup I have to say. Some great games, some wonderful surprises, a couple of out and out villians*...and a happy ending. *the best World Cups have at least one baddie IMV.

What's great about VAR is that it makes the matchday experience worse while we still have clear and obvious errors.

Sorry, this bbc ad has properly rubbed me the wrong way, love the bbc usually but right now I'd push a button to scrap the licence fee overnight. It is simultaneously smug *and* desperate.

I learn from World Cup historian @jonawils.bsky.social that the first third place playoff was Germany vs Austria (both playing in white for maximum confusion), and Mussolini's Italy was hosting, so I'm just going to add the playoff to the long list of fascism's bad ideas (near the bottom though)

I will be blunt, at the point you are asking “but why should Labour MPs stop using a product owned by someone who endorses their own murders?”…you’d think “self-respect” would be on there.

I notice that with people noticing Reform's increasingly aggressive rhetoric towards EU immigrants, a common reaction - from perfectly nice individuals - is "it's awful to think you may have to go home" - when our home is so obviously here, in Britain. This angers me even more than Farage's threats.

Narratively having Ever Given getting stuck in 2021 to set up Hormuz in 2026 is great foreshadowing. You want your audience to understand the basics of international shipping in a lower stakes context so you drop the real plot without a lot of saggy exposition about the minutiae of cargo logistics.

Truly delighted to learn that there is still a shrine to Torchwood's Ianto Jones, 17 years after he was killed off. And that while it might be getting taken down (the area needs maintenance and renovations), he's likely to get a plaque once it's done. Fantastic. www.bbc.com/news/article...

If anyone is friends with any Georgian air traffic controllers, buy them a nice bottle of wine. As guardians of pretty much the only narrow gap still available between Europe and Asia that avoids both Iran, the Gulf, Ukraine and Russia, they are under some substantial pressure.

The extent to which every single one of these panics features people being shown all the previous ones – video games, TV, radio, novels – and insisting that no, no this time is *actually* different (even though the others said that too) is really approaching the Arrested Development meme levels

It’s a running joke in academia that Matt Goodwin is bad at maths. This sort of thing is why: the combined Labour/Green vote could have split in any way possible and Goodwin would have finished 2nd or 3rd. He did not lose because progressives coordinated. He lost *in spite of them not doing so*.

For no reason at all I thought this quote from Katie Lam MP would work in a different font. I thought I’d add a headline too. Apropos of nothing in particular. Really, no reason at all.
Quote from Katie Lam, Conservative MP, on a worn parchment background in the gothic font Fraktur, famous for being used in Germany before 1945.

“There are also a lot of people in this country who came here legally, but in effect shouldn’t have been able to do so. It’s not the fault of the individuals who came here, they just shouldn’t have been able to do so.

They will also need to go home.

What that will leave is a mostly but not entirely culturally coherent group of people.”

There is also a headline, added by me and not part of the original quote or article, that reads:
“Declaration by Katie Lam
on
The Problem of the Immigrants”
