Also, no even the faintest acknowledgment that cities like Bristol or Nottingham host large quantities of university students in proportion to native young population?

We're in the midst of a massive crisis of epistemic authority and social trust, with much of the online information ecosystem basically collapsing into an algorithmic swirl of unverifiable rumour, and Wikipedia is one of the few institutions holding out. Attacking it is stupid and irresponsible.

Agree, even more so now they’ve committed to take new state pension out of tax, they could raise allowance to £13000 and bring down 45 and 40 thresholds just enough to recoup loss, instead of making yet another exception for pensions.

Well how very French. In the flat (now a museum) of 19th century philosopher Auguste Comte, father of positivism, a voucher issued by a Paris theatre to disappointed ticket holders on February 24th 1848 after the evening's performance was "cancelled due to revolution"

Vaping could save millions of lives. The reason people hate it is because it is pleasurable, and some innate puritan part of their brain insists that quitting smoking should involve suffering iandunt.substack.com/p/lost-in-th...

Lost in the cloud: How vaping was undermined by a moral panic
New data shows that vaping is by far the most effective way to stop people smoking. It’s about time we acclimatise ourselves to the evidence.

Surprised that they didn’t try to shoehorn a quote from Paul’s Epistle to Romans vaguely approving of aviation…

To me Adolescence, Half Man and Tip Toe form an almost perfect Bacon-style triptych on toxic masculinity. Just with distorted minds instead of distorted flesh.

That was a fantastic World Cup I have to say. Some great games, some wonderful surprises, a couple of out and out villians*...and a happy ending. *the best World Cups have at least one baddie IMV.

What's great about VAR is that it makes the matchday experience worse while we still have clear and obvious errors.

To be fair, this kind of thing still has modern appeal, like whenever a presumed-dead character returns in Eastenders, don’t they get viewing figures comparable to when they kill a character or burn the Queen Vic down?

I learn from World Cup historian @jonawils.bsky.social that the first third place playoff was Germany vs Austria (both playing in white for maximum confusion), and Mussolini's Italy was hosting, so I'm just going to add the playoff to the long list of fascism's bad ideas (near the bottom though)

Started Starmer’s term hoping that his govt would finally give the vote to EU citizens with settled status… now I fear we may well end Burnham’s with an additional tax band for all pesky foreigners 😏

It will be interesting to see if the future chancellor is bold enough to finally merge NI into income tax and subtly tweak the bands to square that circle.

I notice that with people noticing Reform's increasingly aggressive rhetoric towards EU immigrants, a common reaction - from perfectly nice individuals - is "it's awful to think you may have to go home" - when our home is so obviously here, in Britain. This angers me even more than Farage's threats.
