NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

So at what point do the "legitimate concerns" stop being a get-out-of-jail-free card?

Dear Vovek, Brink is just the best sci-fi in any media at the moment, and what a way to "end" this run - heartbreaking and terrifying in equal measure! But I guess that's what they say in the business - always leave the public burned black and hanging in the sun!

On Andy Burnham's sudden bout of shyness. thecritic.co.uk/sanc...
The close of his statement was an appeal to our better natures. If we were going to ask Israelis and Palestinians to live side-by-side, he said, Britain also had to be a place where “people of all faiths and none have a right to live without prejudice or fear.” Listening to him was Andy Burnham, who has been strangely absent from our public debate for the last few days. In August, we couldn’t move for social media clips from the prime minister, standing on a ladder to discuss his first job, or sitting in a pub to rate bar snacks. But faced with masked thugs trying to shut down British ports over the weekend, Burnham seems to have lost the password for his phone. For a decade now, Britain has had a series of leaders apparently paralysed by the fear that if they say that racism is bad, they’ll be voted out. It would be nice to get one who had a slightly higher opinion of us.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

These weird, hateful obsessives are not the vanguard of public opinion, and they are eminently beatable if the government can get out of its defensive cringe about "legitimate concerns"

At some point we are going to have to address the fact that these people fundamentally want migrants gunned down in the water and nothing short of corpses washing up on beaches will make them happy - and that that’s not a “legitimate concern”

Cowardice, if not complicity. Why did Burnham spend all that time sleazing his way into no 10 if it wasn't to act like a prime minister and stand up to the enemies of our democracy? Was it simply vanity?

As a general note: the median British voter is in favour of doing things that would elicit a quiet whistle of worried admiration from Bomber Harris to those who obstruct or target the RNLI, and quite rightly so. If a government cannot see that and react, it has a problem seeing the simple things.

I'm being only slightly facetious when I say that 1SL should watch the Phantom Menace to see the underlying weakness of this concept. Granted, an Anakin Skywalker doesn't come round every day, but it seems unwise to risk losing your expensive fleet of drones because someone nailed the command ship.
