I think someone would have to devote themself full time to the ol' racism to use that particular slur. It's very much one for the aficionado.

What do you expect? When it comes to actually doing anything that will cost him effort, money or political capital our PM is just a tiny smol bean, at the mercy of powers beyond his control.

Life's Rich Pageant is such a great album! I remember seeing them do a really angry version of Cuyahoga, possibly on Jools Holland, back in around 2002 - I'd never noticed how political they were before.

I completely understand that view. I myself may be biased because I moved here from a much less leafy and rural place in north Nottingham. To me it still has a village vibe - I usually see at least two or three people to say hello to every time I go in to the centre.

There's also now a critical mass of residential value to make the GII listed manor house worth fixing up, and there's an application in for that at the moment, after nearly 30 years of being a ruin. And as for more growth, there are hard boundaries in every direction, not to mention the green belt.

How do you define ruined? I've lived here for nearly 20 years and it's still thoroughly lovely but with a better leisure centre and a much more sustainable independent shopping and cafe culture. They're also rebuilding the school in the next few years to increase capacity.

As a local, I would say it is the obvious place for a distribution centre. It's at the crossroads of the A46/A52, within spitting distance of the A1, and not far from East Mids Airport. However I don't think they've properly thought about access for HGVs so I foresee big roadworks down the line...

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

Tbf there are some quite scary numbers in the yougov polling on RNLI popularity. This is the headline, but as of July, 18% of men dislike the RNLI to some extent. Maybe its turning into a bit of a loyalty test on the right. yougov.com/en-gb/tracke...

Sorry for misunderstanding you there. Also, I take your point, but I think there's quite a lot of organised shit stirring going on on FB and the like. I'd be hugely surprised if there was a real groundswell of dislike for the RNLI among the general public.

Those "people" know exactly what they're doing and who they're targeting. They aren't naive little schoolkids - they're an organised uniformed political movement that seeks to take power through force, and should be treated as such by the state through confrontation, arrest and swift punishment.

Dear Vovek, Brink is just the best sci-fi in any media at the moment, and what a way to "end" this run - heartbreaking and terrifying in equal measure! But I guess that's what they say in the business - always leave the public burned black and hanging in the sun!

"Grown-ups" treating sci-fi as a joke is a good part of why we are where we are. A lot of really worthwhile thinking has been done by authors like Simmons and Saberhagen, but because the books have wacky covers nobody has seriously engaged with the issues they raised and worked through years ago.

On Andy Burnham's sudden bout of shyness. thecritic.co.uk/sanc...
The close of his statement was an appeal to our better natures. If we were going to ask Israelis and Palestinians to live side-by-side, he said, Britain also had to be a place where “people of all faiths and none have a right to live without prejudice or fear.” Listening to him was Andy Burnham, who has been strangely absent from our public debate for the last few days. In August, we couldn’t move for social media clips from the prime minister, standing on a ladder to discuss his first job, or sitting in a pub to rate bar snacks. But faced with masked thugs trying to shut down British ports over the weekend, Burnham seems to have lost the password for his phone. For a decade now, Britain has had a series of leaders apparently paralysed by the fear that if they say that racism is bad, they’ll be voted out. It would be nice to get one who had a slightly higher opinion of us.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

Cowardice, if not complicity. Why did Burnham spend all that time sleazing his way into no 10 if it wasn't to act like a prime minister and stand up to the enemies of our democracy? Was it simply vanity?

As a general note: the median British voter is in favour of doing things that would elicit a quiet whistle of worried admiration from Bomber Harris to those who obstruct or target the RNLI, and quite rightly so. If a government cannot see that and react, it has a problem seeing the simple things.
