roughcast render on a house, yard wall and off shot kitchen. It’s hard to tell where one wall ends and another begins, think “if Santorini was greige, damp and uninviting”. window with iron bars & outward facing prongs on the yard wall, no barbed wire

Sunday presence
A field with a standing stone that’s actually 12 ft tall or more, it’s presence is somewhat diminished from this angle by a wooden electricity pole. A sheep grazes close by, you can only see its bum. In the distance, sunlit hills with electricity pylons cutting through

Looking across the green canal at an old cotton mill building with a white van parked outsideChairs left on a pile of rubble with the top half of a chimney stack framed between them. Not pictured but here the view opens up and you can still see the majority of Burnley’s surviving chimney stacks on a clear day

Traditional pub with red and green walls, wood panelling, wooden furniture and a vintage ‘JOHN SMITH’S MAGNET ALES’ poster, looks 50’s. It’s blue with a hand holding an iridescent pint and I’ve been coveting it for years.

End terraces, one a converted launderette with a blue sign that says ‘LAUNDERAMA’ in bubble style font (the chosen typeface of lots of launderettes in the north west but to my mind it’s seaside doughnut stands)
On the side of the building is a repainted ghost sign for ‘Burnley Co-operative Society LTD - Branch No. 22’ and in the foreground a lamppost with a torn and faded St George’s cross flag.

An old corner shop that’s been closed for years, but is somehow so well preserved. It always feels special to see something like this when I’m out and about and there’s been a few of these moments in Blackburn.
The sign says ‘ROYAL CORNER SHOP - Mr. & MRS.ESAT’ along with a vintage Mars advertisement ‘a Mars a day…’

An old gate on farmland. The original stone post has been added to with old steel tubing and a wooden post, with barbed wire too. A tree-covered hill is in the distance.

sights & signs Barrow
Really milking the walk I took around Barrow docks while I used an EV charger now aren’t I

A window with wood casings, barred with rusty iron spikes and patchwork privacy glass patterned panes:, floral, houndstooth and speckled. To me this is Cumbria A terraced corner, old workshops with boarded up windows, a brick wall damaged by roughcast. no repointing is happening here so climbing plants take hold. A utility pole. Dwellings where people made a living on the docks, moslty shipbuilding, in times before atomic weapons and BAE contracts.

The Devonshire Dock Hall groundscraper looms beyond the terraces. It’s this that reminds me of the landscape around Sellafield to the north, where historic farm buildings and harsh land to dredge are met with the futuristic silhouettes of a nuclear town. double yellows satisfying curve around the base of a utility pole & black bins Wall with two notices “WARNING RAZOR WIRE” “NUCLEAR SITE BOUNDARY”

high summer lurk in this post industrial terrain
pink peregrine

Outer wall of a Victorian warehouse building with a jagged roof. It is heavily decaying, busy and beautiful. The surface is a beige concrete render but its redbrick secret is exposed in areas where the render has aged away. In the centre is a window/vent with a steel pipe - the wall around the pipe has been completely blackened by smoke. Underneath the window, graffiti: tags, ghostly figure and pink peregrine falcon in flight which stands out from its white square background.

Hallamshire Works, former site of Hallamshire Steel & File Co. Ltd.
Established 1873
Neepsend, Sheffield The same building where a drainpipe in the middle of the wall splits away to either side. A sealed up window with an iron pipe sticking out, the wall above this has been blackened by smoke as well. The render finish makes a nice smooth canvas for scribbles which continue right the way alongLooking up at the sawtooth roof, cloudy skies with a bit of blue A close up of one of the arched window shaped vents on the building with metal bars over it, a band of decorative brickwork above. Something blue is bubbling on the wall beneath. Acid north

Mini-study of a quietly disappearing feature of our towns & cities. it’s the mid-rise concrete office building with mosaic tile panels of course

Alt: a close up of the grimy outer wall of a building with horizontal sections of louvre vents, mosaic tile frieze, boarded up windows and a street level section of mosaic tiles that’s been claimed by gig posters and graffiti.

Canon Brewery, for your Stones Bitter, Sheffield Looking up at a dirty mosaic tile wall that would be really satisfying to pressure wash. One patch where a sign has been removed is a slightly brighter grey than the rest

Sheffield Mosaic tile wall of beige brown and cream. Orange foam sealant spilling out from a boarded up retail window

Stockport Sunlight bathed orange and red mosaic tile frieze that I can hear. A section of wood chip board beneath & charcoal brick underneath that at ground level, red valerians grow from the base of the wall.

Threshold
Had to chip for a short while as I was missing the point. Not sure if it’s been found but outside they have dilapidation and the reassuringly expansive moors which have helped.

~In true Calderdale literary tourist fashion have been cosplaying as some iteration of a 19th c. waiting daughter which naturally called for less screen time.~

not pictured: surviving on a foundational diet of bread, cheese and ale.
(& iced latte)

Alt txt: here we have a stone squeeze stile next to a modern day wooden step stile, they mark a threshold between the shaded, green valley and dry, sunlit hillside beyond. Moors upward.
