Wolves did not save Yellowstone – why were we so desperate to believe they did?
Yellowstone’s reintroduced wolves have become a famous conservation success story, but the reality is far messier.

Tarkin: "You would prefer another target? A military target? Then name the system! I grow tired of asking this. So it'll be the last time. Where is the Rebel base?" Rebel: "They're on Yavin IV." Tarkin: "You may fire when ready." Rebel: "No wait, that was just my AI!"

i think we need to do a permission sets push... permission sets are mainly for giving nice human-readable, user-friendly descriptions of resources! if your OAuth screen looks like this, consider publishing/using permission sets. this is scary/useless/non-sensical to users
an atproto oauth screen that has the generic "repository - public changes" and "authenticate - perform actions on your behalf" resources

There are bigger things to be angry about but tech's pivot from "no more ads if you pay" to "fuck you, pay and get ads anyway — and by the way the ads are so much worse now" always feels outrageous

I think it's absolutely mad that today there's a *national news story* about 400 oil platform workers losing their jobs, and the government being blamed. 25% of the UK TV industry lost their jobs in the last 4 years and we never hear a peep about it! Some jobs are 'real jobs' I guess.

I don't think we disdain the center-right enough. First, they rode nativist populist tigers to power to get their tax cuts and deregulation; Then, they lost control of their own parties to those tigers; Now, they sit in lucrative jobs as columnists writing about how it's all the left's fault.

A large group of co-ordinated, masked men blockading a piece of significant infrastructure is a security threat and should be dealt with as one. There should also be serious questions about why police/intelligence services didn't pick up on it in advance.

After the C4 news Reform UK exposé last night, I was sat thinking how we fund our political system to get rid of all the corruption and our self-serving politicos. Cos we know they’re all at it (eg Burnham won’t cap donations cos Labour have too much to hide). This seems pretty spot on to me 👇🏼

Reform show how fucked up political finance is. But I guarantee Labour will be embarrassed over some skeevy donor at some point. Failing to act on this is just inviting scandal, resignations, distrust and collapse of govt. Again. So here are some interconnected ideas to fix it.

Many years ago, I wrote down this bit of a speech Obama gave to an audience in Silicon Valley. Because it absolutely NAILED the difference between government and business.
The final thing I’ll say is that government will never run the way Silicon Valley runs because, by definition, democracy is messy. This is a big, diverse country with a lot of interests and a lot of disparate points of view. And part of government’s job, by the way, is dealing with problems that nobody else wants to deal with.

So sometimes I talk to CEOs, they come in and they start telling me about leadership, and here’s how we do things. And I say, well, if all I was doing was making a widget or producing an app, and I didn’t have to worry about whether poor people could afford the widget, or I didn’t have to worry about whether the app had some unintended consequences then I think those suggestions are terrific.

That's not, by the way, to say that there aren't huge efficiencies and improvements that have to be made.

But the reason I say this is sometimes we get, I think, in the scientific community, the tech community, the entrepreneurial community, the sense of we just have to blow up the system, or create this parallel society and culture because government is inherently wrecked.

No, it's not inherently wrecked; it's just government has to care for, for example, veterans who come home. That's not on your balance sheet, that's on our collective balance sheet, because we have a sacred duty to take care of those veterans. And that's hard and it's messy, and we're building up legacy systems that we can't just blow up.
