Annette M. Rodríguez's "Geranium" appears in our Fall 2026 issue in a portfolio of Latinx Flash Memoir edited by Joy Castro. Read the essay here: prairieschooner.unl.edu/excerpt/gera...
"This geranium emerged in Delicias, Chihuahua, México. Once, groundcover. It grew wider than the field of pumpkin-thick, velveteen eiderdown, with saucer-shaped soft peach blossoms and succulent, hairy leaves, spreading greener with age."

This. When “frontier” started getting deployed in context of AI, I thought “Were there no humanities majors in the room?” Maybe some marketing team thought it romantically evoked pushing boundaries/space exploration. But it also connotes lawlessness, exploitation of people and resources, even death.

I will also say this. There is a real, authentic cohort of poor and working class people in higher education. They can speak to the complexities of being in and not of a class position without making broad, provocative generalizations. One day, someone should publish those people.

Square graphic featuring the book cover of Caminos: Memoirs from the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, Volume I, edited by Zita Arocha. The cover shows a vintage family photograph with several people standing and sitting together, including a central figure wearing a large sombrero. The background of the graphic repeats and enlarges the same sepia-toned photo in soft focus, creating a layered, nostalgic effect.
