Had a great time reminding drivers to pay attention and yield to pedestrians at CP2’s crosswalk action! This crossing at Tower Grove Park has a new flashing light, but no stop. Cars ignore the light and fly through. So many walkers told us they find this crosswalk scary and hostile. #stl #stlouis

I’m hangry about pointless, counterintuitive vending machine “upgrades” today: - fragile, inaccessible touchscreens - weird door that requires two hands to operate and grab your snacks - among the new snacks, a chocolate dough-flavored protein bar that is sneakily non-vegetarian #AccessibilityFail
A fancy new SIUE-branded vending machine with a touchscreen instead of buttons, and a door that you have to push down on (rather hard!) with one hand to access your snacks with the other handA Barebells chocolate dough protein bar. Vegetarians beware! For absolutely no good reason, it includes bovine collagen.

Four weeks in, and I am really enjoying my students' reflection notebooks. I teach #DigitalHumanities courses, so these haven't replaced technology in the way that I've seen others using them. Once a week, we take ten minutes to free-write, doodle, or whatever else in response to a prompt.

My second Door County Century is in the books! Century rides (100 miles in one go) are such a head game. You’d think the last few miles would be the hardest, but it’s somewhere in the 60-70 mile range that you need the most willpower. After that, you can lie to yourself that you’re almost there.

Calling all storytellers! Emplace, a new digital publication, invites community members to contribute stories about how they build community, relationships, and a sense of place in the St. Louis region. We welcome established and emerging voices and a wide variety of formats. #stl #DigitalHumanities
Call for Community Storytellers

Emplace, a new digital publication, invites community members to contribute stories about how they build community, relationships, and a sense of place in the St. Louis region. We welcome established and emerging voices and a wide variety of formats.
Emplace centers placemaking through storytelling as a creative practice. The term emplace evokes intentionality, care, and action in relation to the work of strengthening communities through sharing local stories. Stories have the power to create change.

Stories shape who we are, how we understand the world around us, and how we imagine the future. Through storytelling, Emplace advocates for spatial justice, in which people have access to healthy living environments, equal access to resources and services, and the ability to contribute to the identity and future of their homes.

Emplace supports its contributors with developmental editing and community-based review, creating a genre of public scholarship that values the works of diverse contributors. The interactive story genres on Emplace include data visualization, video production, podcasting, mapping, graphic networks, and scrollytelling, a technique that dynamically reveals multimedia content as a reader scrolls through a narrative.

Contributors don’t need to have technical expertise, just a story to tell. SIUE’s IRIS Center for Digital Humanities will support contributors in bringing their digital stories to life, including technical and editorial support. Contributions will be reviewed prior to publication, and accepted authors will receive honoraria of $500 per piece.

My greatest footnote has gotta be a toss-up between the tangled webs of early modern Irish lordly families and the time I fell in a creek for research. #skystorians 🗃️
A note on naming conventions: There is a great deal of name overlap and ambiguity among the major figures in this case. Not only do Sir Finghin O'Driscoll (of Ballyisland and of Dún na Séad/Baltimore) and Finghín Carrach O'Driscoll (of Dún na Long/Sherkin Island) share a name, but both Finghins had eldest sons named Conor and younger sons named Donnchadh, the latter of whom litigated on their fathers behalf. Both Finghins were also sons of two different Conors: Conor mac Finghin, father of Finghin Carrach, and Conor mac Conor, father of Sir Finghin. For that reason, Sir Finghin of Ballyisland is always referred to as Sir Finghín, and Finghín Carrach always carries his epithet.
Occasionally, there are ambiguous references to Finghín, in which case the name given is that in the text. Where there is potential for ambiguity, Donnchadh Carrach also carries his epithet. Both Conors always carry their patronymics. See Figure 1 for a family tree.
383 The pollution of Cowmire Creek today is underreported. Historic newspaper articles detail sewage effluent, and residents of the surrounding neighborhoods have shared video of runoff from the West Lake Landfill (a poorly contained radioactive site) leaking into the creek. See for example, Margaret Gillerman, "Farmer, Suburbanites Clash on Runoff," St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 26 July 1979; Loré Hayes Szcepanski, "Releasing rainwater from Westlake Landfill into Cowmire Creek. I'm not okay with that & you shouldn't be either." Facebook, 23 July 2023,

Week 1 is always a little strange in a DH course, because students are trying to wrap their heads around what exactly DH is. And that’s fair, because today, #DigitalHumanities is transporting 2.5 dozen donuts across state lines for the @siueiris.bsky.social open house. (1 bike, 3 buses, 1 train)

If you’d like to shop at some bookstores that are actually in the heart of the city, might I recommend… • Leviathan (new, S Grand) • Dunaway (used, S Grand) • Left Bank (both, Central West End) • Read a Book (used, Dutchtown) #stl #stlouis
Quote from an article about Half Price Books opening a new St. Louis location: "We've been in the St. Louis market since 2014 and think we have found the perfect location for a new community of readers," Kathy Doyle Thomas, president of Half Price Books, said in a statement. "Our stores in Chesterfield, University City and St. Charles are performing well. We know it is the right time to brin the unique Half Price Books experience to the heart of the city."The 6,700-square-foot bookstore at th Southpoint Plaza shopping center at 4491 Lemay Ferry Road will be the company's sixth store in Missouri. The three other existing St. Louis-area locations are in Chesterfield, University City and St. Charles. It also operates in Kansas City and Independence.A Google Maps screenshot showing the new location, which is in fact not in the city at all. (Neither are any of its other locations.)
