The wearable bake challenge on last night's #BakeOff has inspired us to take a look through our collections portal to see which hats we'd like to see edible versions of. The shape of this hat makes it a deceptively simple choice - you know you'll run out of time trying to recreate that pattern!
A short cylindrical-shaped hat made from woven cotton fabric. It has a dark blue, mid blue and white striped pattern, with fainter white stripes woven in perpendicular to the other stripes to create a checked design.

We have something old and interesting to show you today. This is the Geneva Bible or Breeches Bible. It dates to 1607!
We are looking at a slightly beaten up and aged leather book witt broken hasps. We are looking at the same leather bound book from the side showing the yellow, aged and worn pages. Remnants of two leather hasps and their fixings can still be seen.

7th of Owltober! A glimpse BTS at South Island Wildlife Hospital in Chch, NZ. "Although bursting with beautiful birds and passionate people, [SIWH] runs on donations and the smell of an oily rag" Want to donate? www.wildlifehospital.co.nz/help-us/ Source: 1news.co.nz/2023/10/26/s... #owlsintowels 💛🦉
This Little Owl in both name and nature is wrapped in a cornflower blue tea towel on a white table.

She's held secure by eight fingers belonging to a reporter in a pink top and black jacket. The owl's black pupils reflect tube lights, and her irises and beak are matching limoncello yellow. They're in alignment due to the low camera angle and the owl's lifted chin, which accentuates a look of immense suspicion at the photographer: bombastic down-the-beak eye. From this vantage too, the owl's black rictal bristles look like short steep-angled eyebrows. The rest of the owl's feathers are dark brown, cream-streaked, and masked around the eyes, with bunching around the quote-unquote "jawline", like sideburns.

Small stature + sideburns + black & yellow accents = Owlverine

A little view that you can no longer see. This glimpse of a medieval window from inside a quadruple Tudor chimney stack was only visible 10 years ago whilst we undertook some flood recovery work. This space is now a much needed cupboard!
We are looking at a corridor made of brick, it leads to a dead end of a limewashed wall and glazed stone mullion window.

Special K. For #EpigraphyTuesday, we look at two instances of the archaic K in the word EVOKATVS, normally EVOCATVS, recalled veterans who were "called out" of retirement to re-enlist, with many privileges for doing so. This one, Ingenuus, was a career soldier. #AncientBluesky 🏺
FUNERARY MONUMENT FOR AN EVOCATUS, 200-250 CE. CASINO DELL'AURORA LUDOVISI

A weathered marble funerary altar standing outdoors, surrounded by the fallen leaves of autumn. The front face features a carved relief of a standing Roman soldier wearing a heavy military cloak and proudly holding the baton of his rank. Below is a Latin inscription which translates to: "To the departed shades. For Quintus Vetius Ingenuus, veteran of the Third Praetorian Cohort, from the province of Lower Germany. Marcus, an evocatus (recalled veteran), his heir and fellow citizen, made this for a well-deserving man." Unlike many Roman epitaphs, Ingenuus's sole heir and dedicator is a fellow soldier and countryman. This suggests a life wholly dedicated to military service, devoid of a traditional family structure. According to epigraphic analysis, the monument dates to the first half of the third century CE.

6th of Owltober! While examining 'Snowy' the Snowy Owl for injuries, staff at Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary in Canada couldn't help but take a picture. And we're all glad they did. Want to donate to WWS? woodlandswildlifesanctuary.ca/donate Source: fb.com/260048249491... #owlsintowels #owltober 💛🦉
"Snowy" the Snowy Owl is on their back partially wrapped in a white towel looking up at camera with eyes bright yellow + slightly crossed. The half-open mouth on Snowy, or on any beaked animal for that matter, kind of makes it look like they're smiling - due to the consummate V's of the upper and lower beak forming a happy arrowhead shape "⮟". The reality of course is Snowy is likely very agitated, vocal, and causing a scene. Such is wildlife work. Snowy's feathers are white, save for some bow-shaped bars across the chest, as if someone tried drawing roof tiles with a black pen. If I'm not mistaken these marking indicate Snowy is female. Snowy also has very thick white 'moustache' of rictal bristles, which as the original caption says adds to a look of "adorable fierceness!"

Ballpoint pen and colored pencil.

At the top of the piece we see the delicately drawn branches and leaves of an apple tree. Just beneath the tree limbs, a bat is flying with one of the green apples in its mouth. This is when the morphing begins, reader. A sequence of 13 drawings show the bat morphing into a teeny witch (with completion of the morph around drawing #9). The morphing creates a spiral leading us to the center of the page where the little witch is running towards her basket filled with apples. It’s likely she’ll re-morph into a bat again and the morphing pattern will continue.
