Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.
A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.

On the same day that Google forced Gemini down my throat and my kid discovered AI in Google docs, the news is released that atmospheric CO2 concentrations are rising faster than ever. Our entire economy runs on climate denial. It's a ponzi scheme where we steal from the future and call it GDP.
1. Atmospheric CO2 levels are rising faster than ever Data from one of the longest-running and most reputable carbon dioxide observatories in the world suggests that atmospheric levels of the greenhouse gas increased at a record rate in 2024. The Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii has been tracking atmospheric CO2 since 1958, and is "a good guide to rise in global average CO2 concentration," according to the UK's Met Office. Mauna Loa's measurements show that between 2023 and 2024, CO2 concentrations rose by about 3.6 parts per million, the largest annual increase on record, meaning that not only are CO2 emissions still rising, but they're rising faster than ever. This growth is not compatible with any pathways to limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius set out by the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change.

Nesta CEO @raviguru.bsky.social has a new fortnightly blog, and pleased that he’s started with one of our coolest projects: Start at Home for heating engineers ravigurumurthy.substack.com/p/the-overco...
The government is currently offering £7500 to anyone who gets a heat pump. So here's an additional suggestion: why not offer the 150,000 people who are on the 'Gas Safe Register' (e.g. boiler installers) a free heat pump. Let's make it a financial no-brainer for the people with perhaps the biggest influence on people's heating choices to go green. If they own a heat pump themselves - assuming they perform well (the evidence says they do), we'll have 150,000 heat pump owners leading the government's word-of-mouth campaign. If they become installers themselves, then they'll also be much better at selling heat pumps to customers as they can talk credibly about their own experience.
Nesta is now prototyping the idea at a small scale.
In partnership with the Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers' Federation (SNIPEF), we are giving around 20 experienced plumbing and heating professionals, who have just undertaken heat pump training, a heat pump to install in their own home.
