The administration's goal, openly stated, is to consolidate police power in the country and create a huge, well-funded, extremely aggrieved, pro-MAGA, anti-immigrant, anti-protestor police force the likes of which we have never seen in this country.

Of all the patently false ideas MAGA is scaffolded on, the idea that we were a less violent society 150 years ago might be the most egregious.

This is one of the things that the “it was always this bad” crowd misses - our expressed values matter, and failing to live up to them is different from disowning them.

I think this might be worded a little harshly (as was my initial response to it), but it's hard to ignore the way the Democrats have left wins on the table in an electoral strategy that clearly didn't make sense long before they dropped it (if they even really did).

Arizona's dem governor had a capital punishment off ramp right in front of her (for at least as long as she was in office, maybe longer) by way of a recommendation from an expert she hired. So she fired him and has had 3 people executed in 3 years and currently seeking another warrant.

Most people in the USA have been very willing to allow a great deal of state violence so long as they do not need to witness or experience it regularly. MAGA has used this to push the limit of how much violence the USA will tolerate. There is no reason to think the escalation will stop.

I don't know if I have a fully-formed opinion on the "public" part of public executions, but most of the quotes here are "I have no qualms with doing everything in my power, but I draw the line at reckoning with that."

Like fundamentally this is the same principle. Someone in power wants something. What, are you gonna cause a problem by withholding it? Or are you gonna find an amicable solution? Different scales but the same instinctive, groveling worship of power & privilege

If you’ve read about TN this week, please take a moment with this piece if you didn’t read it when we published it: It’s an investigation into the execution team Alabama has put together. It’s officers with a history of violence who choose each other. Eye-opening to what happens in executions.

In Alabama, Prison Guards Accused of Violence and Misconduct Carry Out Secretive Executions - Bolts
As Alabama keeps details around the death penalty hidden, an investigation into its execution team raises questions about how incarcerated people are treated in their final moments.

We don't—likely won't—know the level of certification Christa Pike's would-be executioners held. However, Tennessee changed its protocol to let EMTs, who don't as a rule receive *any* training on IV placement, to place IVs for lethal injection, despite death row's vasculature-destroying conditions.

My latest @ms.now, on why it‘s not (legally) cruel and unusual for Tennessee to try to execute Christa Pike again, even w all the risks that remain, but also on why Gov. Bill Lee has far more political room to use his clemency than our conventional political narrative suggests.
ms.now
Opinion | Tennessee botched its attempted execution of Christa Pike. It shouldn’t try again.
John Pfaff: Gov. Bill Lee can do what the Supreme Court will not — and prevent a punishment that already feels morally cruel and unusual.

What's happening in Tennessee is yet another reminder that the death penalty is state-sanctioned torture. It's an inhumane practice that has no place in a just society. The criminal legal system should never get to decide who lives and who dies.
Infographic with text:
Since the 1970s...
At least 1,683 people have been executed in the U.S.

At least 203 people have been wrongly convicted & sentenced to death, later being exonerated.

More than half of all people sentenced to death have been Black or Latino/a.

Seeing reasonable people have a take on here I can't quite get on board with. A botched lethal injection is practically business as usual. What happened to Christa Pike tonight (if early reports are accurate and I'm reading them correctly) would be the strangest way one has ever been botched.

How is the law indeterminate? Trump can simultaneously call for harsh treatment of people sentenced to the death penalty and murder 234 people in boat strikes The 16 people executed since 1988 have caused the deaths of 195 people (most by Timothy McVeigh, who killed 168 people) LAW ≠ Ethics
