Of all the weird recurring motifs of the stories people tell me about the AI labor wars, the *weirdest* is when bosses demand to be reassured that their contractors and workers will *absolutely* use AI to get the job done.
A worn out keyboard, cropped over the bottom left modifier keys. Posed in the image is a bearded prophet in Bronze Age robes, arms uplifted in worship.

1/5 New from Michael Pollan (from his book “A World Appears”): what novelists understand about consciousness that neuroscientists miss. Most brain scientists distrust the wandering mind. They want every mental effort rewarded, ideally with a publication. 🧵

Yesterday, I attended a workshop on systems thinking and political change, which included a presentation on the work of Donella Meadows, whose *Thinking in Systems* is a canonical work on the subject: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thinkin... 1/
A king on a sumptuous, much elaborated throne; in one hand he holds a sceptre of office, in the other, the leashes for two fierce stone dogs that guard the throne. The king's head has been replaced with a character who was used as the basis for MAD Magazine's Alfred E Neumann. The new head sports a conical dunce cap. Behind the king is a UK Reform Party rosette. The background is an Egyptian temple, ganked from a Dore Old Testament engraving. The floor has been carpeted in sumptuous tabriz from the Ottoman court.

Pollution levels in Paris after they introduced bike lanes and car restrictions Red = EU limits for Nitrogen Dioxide pollution Original graphics by Atelier Parisien d'Urbanisme www.apur.org
A series of six heatmap-style graphics showing changes in pollution levels across Paris over time, with each square map labeled by year: 2007, 2010, 2015, 2017, 2020, and 2024. The earlier maps in 2007 and 2010 are dominated by dense red and orange colors concentrated in the city center, with landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame labeled, indicating heavy pollution. Over the years the intensity of red areas fades, especially in 2015 and 2017 where the pollution begins to spread less densely, and by 2020 the colors shift more toward yellow and green, showing significant reductions in pollution. The 2024 map is the cleanest, with the majority of the area in yellow and green tones and only major road arteries showing thin red lines, demonstrating far less air pollution. Each map includes a “2 miles” scale marker, and the visual progression highlights how bike lanes and car restrictions introduced in Paris contributed to decreasing air pollution levels throughout the city.

Posting this extract from a lecture by John Maynard Keynes, speaking on the BBC in the middle of the Second World War, to every Labour cabinet minister
Let us not submit to the vile doctrine of the nineteenth century that every enterprise must justify itself in pounds, shillings and pence of cash income … Why should we not add in every substantial city the dignity of an ancient university or a European capital … an ample theater, a concert hall, a dance hall, a gallery, cafes, and so forth. Assuredly we can afford this and so much more. Anything we can actually do, we can afford… We are immeasurably richer than our predecessors. Is it not evident that some sophistry, some fallacy, governs our collective action if we are forced to be so much meaner than they in the embellishments of life? …

Telling. Quantity of male versus female dialogue in best picture films of recent decades (by @puddingviz)
A horizontal bar graph titled "Men speak most in best picture winning films," showing the proportion of words spoken by male and female characters in Best Picture Oscar winners from 1991 to 2016. The graph displays the year and film title, followed by two horizontal bars for each film, representing the percentage of words spoken by women (purple) and men (dark blue). The graph visually demonstrates that male characters consistently have a higher proportion of spoken words compared to female characters across most of the films listed.
