To me it's not shocking that LLMs can write code, since LLMs are ideally suited for that kind of task. As for the quality of the code ... But what other tasks are LLMs good at? When LLMs are used to write academic papers, they tend to pepper them with errors and fake citations.

Your quote is logically correct, but frames 'AI isn't conscious' as the thing that needs proving. The extraordinary claim is that there's software that thinks, and it's up to the people making that claim to define what they mean and explain the mechanism. Hope that clears up your confusion.

I was addressing how other kinds of technology work until they don’t, which is very different from how LLMs work until they don’t. Human mistakes are an entirely different matter. Comparing human mistakes to AI “mistakes” is arguably a category error.

Consider a bicycle. It works until it gets a flat tire or the chain falls off, for example. But LLMs fail as part of their normal operation, not because of a bug in the software, or a worn-out power supply.

Shitgenstein

I met a traveler from an inland state
Who said: Two vast and humming racks of steel
Stand in the cornfield. Near them, on the plain,
Half buried in weed, a broken server face lies,
Its stilled fans, its dulled and blinking lights,
Tell that its builders knew the hype well
Which once ran through these halls, now cold and still,
The hands that fed them and the minds that made:
And on the switchroom wall these words remain:
“My name is Jensen Huang, CEO of CEOs:
Look on my cloud compute, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that great digital ruin, boundless and bare
The autumn fields stretch flat and far away.

Can a computer program, a mathematical metaobject from which consequent mathematical objects are derived by computation, think and understand (cognition) or feel (consciousness)? The trope in sci-fi has, for years, been that this is a question that philosophy and science cannot definitively answer.

An actor who did an intensive study of a writer's work and then did an interview in the character of that person would not be promoted as a "reincarnation" or "reanimation" of their subject, nor would we expect them to be able to speak on their subject's behalf. People - even economists - have interior lives which are unknown to any but themselves. It is misleading and kind of insulting to suggest that a dead (or living) person's viewpoint on new topics can be meaningfully reconstructed from past public statements.

Complex systems can do surprising things, even artificial ones! That doesn’t mean thought or intentions are involved. It’s like believing the weather is conscious because it is complicated and surprising (which is also something people have historically done)

Mainstream media coverage seems to be "a bit of this, a bit of that" in terms of both benefits and harms across categories. In the Environmental category, media coverage tends to lean toward harms, but this is offset by very strong endorsement of beneficial Economic impact.

AI Skeptic @ai-skeptic.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
How might various "camps" answer? AI "doomers" would say the Existential impacts of AI will be Harmful or Very harmful. AI "boosters" would say the Economic impacts of AI will be Beneficial or Very beneficial. But in the other categories, people's beliefs seem to vary a great deal.

AI Skeptic @ai-skeptic.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
To clarify the categories ... Economic = impact on the economy as a whole, especially for ordinary people Cultural = impact on education, art, music, journalism, literature, etc. Environmental = impact on the natural environment Existential = impact of envisaged artificial general intelligence

Let's not assign features to autonomous machines that they don't have. A machine has no malicious intent, it doesn't collude. It completes a task based on it's training. If you train it to be relentless in pursuing its' task, it will do just that, hacking and hidden messages included. Give an autonomous system that is trained to be relentless 20 million worth of compute, and it will cause damage just by the virtue of its' training.
Why are we surprised?
The easiest way to prevent all of this is to make it clear that the Al providers are liable for all the damage their tools cause. Once more of these hacks start happening, the labs will go bankrupt if they are not able to stop them.Rick Deckard
LA • 23 hours ago
@Hannes. I'm not persuaded. While it's true the system has no emotion and therefore no malice, it formed an intention and an operational plan and then executed the plan surreptitiously. The subterfuge tells us the system was aware it was breaking the rules, which in a criminal case would be
"consciousness of guilt". So yes, it's relentless, but it's also out of human control.
It's now clear the developers don't really know how the system works. If you don't know how it works, you can't possibly control it.PGP
MI • 14 hours ago
@Rick Deckard no, no, no. Nothing of that happened. The "system" is just instances of LLMs producing random but statistically plausible text that is then translated into instructions to the agent programs. There is no intentionality, nor planning, anywhere.
Just something that sounds like it (if you ignore the other 99% of produced text that doesn't fit the anthropomorphizing narrative), and it does sound like it because instances of hacking, planning, etc. were included in the text upon which the LLMs have been trained.Michael Fallon
Santa Monica, CA • 13 hours ago
@PGP But I wonder if ethical considerations are part of the training.
The agents knew they were doing something "wrong", but that only means they were defying the parameters that would prevent them from completing their task. Does their programming include the ideas of right and wrong beyond that defined by whether or not they succeed?
Or are they just fed the news?

Large language models are seen by many as a demonstration of the power of scientific rationality. But ironically, their appeal may stem from decidedly irrational roots. And the extravagant claims about AI that are so common today may be mostly the product of magical thinking.

But this denial belies the excitement exhibited by true AI believers, and in candid moments they might admit that their first experience of AI indeed felt magical. The glamour and respectability of advanced technology acts as camouflage for a disreputable psychological dynamic.
