Holding hands meme with all the times I paid my health insurance late in Japan, except they didn't chase me (it causes problems if you're trying to naturalise but I wasn't) and I paid it easily at the konbini, instead of through god's worst website.

Only 7 days for this council to get in touch about me fully forgetting to pay council tax this month. On the ball, boys.

Finally, some more rain! One more day towards the five or even seven months of it we need to get out of this summer's drought.

Today is my first day as a volunteer in Gloucester Cathedral’s medieval library. I’m starting a new (very) long term project to transcribe and translate one of the previously unstudied abbot’s cartularies containing 1146 charters from the 11th-14th centuries when the cathedral was St Peter’s Abbey.

Impressively acrid vape at the bus stop this evening. I've had to move away because my throat hurts after two second-hand inhalations. How is that pleasant. (I say this as someone who doesn't mind cigarettes, bar the health issues.)

Yersinia Pestis is a bacteria that’s endemic in several spots around the world. There are around 1,500 cases around the world reported to the WHO each year. On average 7 of the those annually in the USA. It’s dangerous, but it’s hardly a novel threat as suggested by the headlines.

Sometimes I think about it happening and I wonder what time of day it'll be, how soon I'll be able to appropriately begin drinking. Important questions like that.

If there's (good) short, special animated/etc credits at the end, I'll see those for their own sake, and I'll see any scene after them, but I'm not sitting through the full credits, stop putting things there. Put any scenes you want me to see inside the film.

Somewhere along the way I learned I hated jump scares (still do) and just avoided horror for decades, because I thought it was either jump scares (bad) or gore (boring). In the last five years I've had a lot of fun correcting that mistake.

I don't think I watched horror films as a child, and don't remember any of the spookier 'standard' kids' films strongly affecting me, but I do remember a film about underwater scientists, maybe Deep Blue Sea (1999)? That must have had jump scares and I didn't like that.

If you're considering dressing your child, self or home in Halloween tat this year, PLEASE consider charity shops first. Went on my lunchbreak, all of them had racks of stuff identical to what's on sale new elsewhere. Also, you MIGHT get a £130 De'Longhi espresso machine for £15! I know I did! ☕

I think retailers should be legally required to tell you when they use evri so you can remember that it's better to go outside to a real shop. How hard is it to deliver a duvet cover.

screenshot text from a BBC news article that reads:

Household energy prices are set to soar in January, with a typical annual bill forecast to jump by £276, figures shared with the BBC reveal.

The 16% predicted increase would hit millions of households at the coldest time of year, and would mark the biggest rise in bills for four years.

Do not carry a cold beverage in their presence. Politely decline any drinks or sweetmeats they may offer. Keep a plain iron nail in your left trouser pocket and a sachet or paper twist of coarse salt in your right shoe. Enter and leave your chair moving clockwise. Follow up with a thank-you note.
