Nothing ever changes
Some years ago, when COBOL was the great white programming hope, one heard much talk of the possibility of executives being able to read programs.

With the perspective of time, we can see that this claim was merely intended to attract the funds of executives who hoped to free themselves from bondage to their programmers.

Nobody can seriously have believed that executives could read programs. Why should they? Even programmers do not read pro-grams.

Real good bit about the slippery slope of genAI use. A battle we're already fighting, especially against the C-suite.
Text clip from the Harvard Gazette article:

He continued, “Whatever your chosen profession is, please don’t let AI rob you of the fun part of it. Your generation’s upcoming battle won’t be humans against AI; that’s at least two months away. … It’s going to be people with substance versus people with shallow knowledge. It’s going to be mastery versus faking it. It’s going to be people with good taste versus tacky. I trust you will put in the work necessary to be on the right side of those battles.”

I think this is a key insight about the AI psychosis we are seeing exhibited by big tech CEOs. The further you are away from the work, the more you assume it’s trivial for Claude or ChatGPT to replace the worker.

"Intellectual property" was once an obscure legal backwater. Today, it is *the* dominant area of political economy, the organizing regime for almost all of our tech regulation, and the most valuable - and most controversial - aspect of global trade policy: pluralistic.net/2026/04/01/m... 1/

Through the window in the back of the shack, we see a detail from another Dore Old Testament engraving: bodies escaping The Flood.

This is the root of anti-localization piranhas. They desperately want to “know Japanese” without having to actually study it, so therefore all translated media must be MTL (a tool they can use with two clicks; any harder would be scary) or dry, literal, spiritually comatose translations with notes.

Lovely anecdote about sir Tony Hoare skipping work to catch a film at the cinema.
About 50% of our meetings were spent talking about these matters relating to his career, while the rest varied across a vast range of topics. In particular, I wanted to ask him about a story that I had heard from a relative, that Tony - whilst working at Microsoft in Cambridge - would like to slip out some afternoons and watch films at the local Arts Picturehouse. This had come about because on one occasion a current film in question was brought up in conversation and it transpired Tony had seen it, much to the bemusement of some present. The jig was up - Tony admitted that, yes, sometimes he would nip out on an afternoon and visit the cinema. When I met Tony and gently questioned him on this anecdote he confirmed that indeed this was one of his pleasures and his position at Microsoft more than accommodated it.
