out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

My folks lost their home to an electrical fire a couple weeks ago. My dad built it himself one summer when I was a kid & they lived there for 40 years. Fortunately they’re unharmed & getting past the shock. I’m on the other side of the world & can’t do much to help out, so I made this for them.
An acrylic gouache painting of a long house with a brick facade and a garage with yellow siding, surrounded by trees and a small decorative windmill, their schnauzer runs through the front yard. A blue sky with a few soft white clouds fills 2/3 of the vertical painting. The colors are highly saturated.

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

A page from ‘nod away, volume 1’, pen and ink on bristol. Ho ho, hoo hoo.
A deity sitting in the clouds in a black sky, one large eye for a face, lots of lines moving outwards from the eye, a mouth that looks like fingers, liquid pouring from the mouth. This description doesn’t really do it justice, but there’s a lot going on. A male figure with long hair and a scraggly beard rides in a craft in the black water below the deity. The words ‘HO HO, HOO HOO’ are written in the sky in large block letters.
