As of this month, The Consensus has now passed 1,000 followers on Twitter, 1,000 followers on LinkedIn, and 1,000 newsletter subscribers. A decent first 9 months! Even in the age of AI, and likely supercharged due to it, people still want to understand how software works.

The semantic search isn't always perfect (it's a cheap model, made cheaper (and slightly worse) with model2vec), but this is just such a cool way to find jobs in compilers, os development, container runtimes, etc. theconsensus.dev/jobs.html

AI makes it instantaneous to chase every idea, spin up agents for every stray thought, ask the LLM instead of talking to customers, skip marketing in favor of launching the same AI-generated assets as everyone else easier than ever to go fast. hard as always to do it well

When almost every single vendor post out there is written by AI, it's no longer hard to stand out. Simply stop using AI to write prose.

We tried everything under the sun during Covid (team CoD, team boardgamearena) but not escape rooms. They're good for coworkers, good for family, good for friends. Can't believe they didn't take off. Enchambered is pretty good online co-op escape room. Got any others?

. @bcantrill.bsky.social is on the right track here. I’d argue making absolute claims far outside one’s domain of expertise isn’t called out enough. People do it because it costs them little if they are wrong and makes them feel and look good if they are right bcantrill.dtrace.org/2026/09/27/f...

Why are database benchmarks always some nicely assembled TPC queries and not just an utter horror unleashed upon the world? Join Order Benchmark is just IMDB. JuniorVoluteerDataEngBench would be so appalling people would say “that’s not a realistic workload/query”… because it’s too realistic.

I needed code indexing of major systems to help me research software. And now Standard subscribers get access to the same dataset. At the moment around 60 databases and programming languages are indexed (searchable, browsable), and the full 400+ project corpus is the goal.

Trying to see if we can get slightly better code viewing and code search if we 1) only index the 400-something projects we track and 2) only index a few recent tagged commits.
