The weather is beautiful and it's almost fall break, so it's time for the late-fall field experiment deployments in both lab classes - clay caterpillars in the woods and leaf packs in the river.

Currently feeling like I use R like I spoke French in college - I know how to write code to do what I want but it is clunky as hell and uses an obsolete vocabulary. Would be faster to use the equivalent of GoogleTranslate (other people's code), but then I don't entirely trust what I'm writing.

The kind of reading that can be assisted by AI is the worst kind of reading, the "let me just look up this one thing because I need a citation" kind. Which is not-coincidentally the kind of reading that easily leads to plagiarism because it skips the maturing-in-the-brain stage.

Yes, and also, the reading time is part of the process of writing! Put the words in your brain. Let them sit there and mix together and proof like bread dough. Remove them from your brain at a later date.

Rest in peace, Wendell Berry.
The Peace of Wild Things
Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
