Searching for bivalve larval shells today in the scanning electron microscope. Here are a couple specimens that we collected on the continental shelf offshore Dauphin Island, Alabama. The first image is of Radiolucina amianta and the second is Nuculana acuta. #TinyWorlds #ScanningElectronMicroscopy

The Drexel press release (drexel.edu/news/archive...) talks about the research collections in terms that certainly make it sound like they're going to keep curating them and welcoming research. It's a university press release, of course, with expected levels of turd-polishing, but still.

Appalled that the Academy of Natural Sciences will be closing it's museum. ANSP's collections are invaluable for studying biodiversity & how it has changed over time & the museum provides people with opportunities to engage with STEM in fun & interesting ways. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/01/u...

Ocean acidity has increased by ~30% over pre-Industrial levels due to the uptake of anthropogenic CO2. Pteropods, “sea butterflies,” are planktonic snails that are sensitive to these changes. Scientists have found that their shells are getting thinner & are dissolving, especially at high latitudes.
