This is great research which brings together histories of sex work and trans histories in England. The article notes that trans women who sold sex were targeted using laws on homosexuality, furthering our understanding of the ways medical and legal models were used to construct sex.

Unpopular view but I think a lot of problems in unis could be helped by capping the maximum wage at 2.5 x full time entry lecturer pay (as lecturers do most of the core university work) which might increase lecturer pay as a side benefit to cutting a lot of nonsense.

Who Tiddles? Oh he wouldn’t hurt a fly…
We are looking at a medieval painting depicting a large cat like monster who has partially eaten a man - just his red hosed legs can still be seen. The monster has a collar and is on a lead which is held by a woman who is not in the least perturbed that her pet has eaten a man. She is wearing a blue dress, yellow cloak and a white wimple. In the background are men holding cross bows, swords - they appear to have been in the middle of a battle but have stopped whilst the man is getting chomped on.

I’ve loved Walden’s previous work but this is unacceptable. It’s plagiarism, veering into fraud. Just because historians tell stories about real things that happened doesn’t mean you get to take those stories with essentially no credit to the person who did the hard work of piecing them together.

Im so exhausted by this pattern. Historians spend years in the archives to write detailed accounts of the past. Only for journalists, doctors, podcasters, and now cartoonists, to swoop in and get paid a lot of money to trot out the same work, "uncovering hidden histories" that are not at all hidden.

This is cool: a Portuguese LGBTQ+ media platform has picked up on the article about my book in the Guardian, and reflected on some similarities between Northern Ireland's and Portugal's queer history.
The Parallel with Portugal During the Dictatorship

In Portugal, during the Estado Novo dictatorship, there were similar mechanisms of silent repression and moral control. As the exhibition “Farewell Homeland and Family” recalls, many LGBTQ+ people lived for decades in a kind of forced invisibility, tolerated only as long as they remained discreet and away from the public sphere.

Homosexuality was associated with “immorality,” “vagrancy,” and deviation from the family values defended by the regime. The political police and authorities resorted to surveillance, persecution, and detentions, while social pressure pushed many people into double lives, prolonged silences, and hidden relationships.

As in Northern Ireland described by Hulme, in Portugal there was also often a contradictory logic: society could suspect, perceive, or even discreetly comment on certain queer experiences, as long as these did not publicly challenge the dominant norm.

When Silence Is No Longer Enough

This apparent “tolerance” was, however, dependent on invisibility. When LGBTQ+ people claim public space, rights, or collective recognition, the conservative reaction historically tends to intensify. The pattern repeats itself in different contexts: the problem has never been just queer existence, but the refusal to remain hidden.

The history of Northern Ireland, and also of Portugal, shows how repression and tolerance can coexist ambiguously. And how silence, often confused with acceptance, was in reality a condition imposed for survival.
