My first Fire Emblem was Path of Radiance, which is available on GameCube NSO. I haven't played the NSO version so I don't know if it has any quirks, but I loved it and it started my love of the series. If you're cool with some older game jank, it has probably my favorite narrative in the series.

Older Fire Emblem games are chapter-based visual novels with tactics battles in between. Shorter, more authored, less focus on freedom and choice in favor of a very designed experience. Awakening on 3DS is a good first game for newcomers, if you have access to a 3DS and a way to get 3DS games.

Good question! I think it depends somewhat on what kind of experience you are looking for. Three Houses is a great entry point but is very different from classic Fire Emblem and feels closer to Persona Except With Tactics. It's probably the most accessible (modern console, game is on the market).

All the best parts of the game - the mechanical complexity, the most authored and compelling map design, the character interactions that are more than surface level - are hidden behind tedium. And I don't blame a single person who bails because of the tedium.

Audiobook listeners: what are some activities y'all do with your hands when you're listening to an audiobook? Gaming doesn't work for me because my attention gets too focused on game mechanics so I don't hear the words of the book. But I don't want to do chores every time I listen to a book either.
