Don't get to teach Shakespeare much anymore but I always liked talking through the "most of the members of the Wu-Tang Clan have a more varied vocab than Shakespeare" chart with students who assumed artists today are more limited. No way you get this distribution without rappers who read widely.

Finally got rid of Spark today. Bummer as it was a pretty great tool up until it got overly infused with "helpful" AI features. Over the past six months, it became basically unusable. Very nice to see Mailbird behaving reasonably now on my Mac so that will be the next tool.

Lately, we have been trying to flex Claude a bit more for some of our early stage work (yes - I am keenly aware of the downside given the recent news cycles). Basically, could there be a there there, doing simulations to see if it might be worthwhile expending actual lab experiments.

So that's the thing. I grew up Mormon. And there are ~progressive poly folks~ who insist "Oh but haha we're not doing it BAD like those crazy Mormons did, we're GOOD people!" and then merrily describe doing shit that "oppressed Mormon sister wives in the 1860s" 100% would not have put up with.

So I have been tinkering a bit with Claude (the $20 paid tier) for assisting with lit surveys and acting as a proxy grumpy reviewer. Basically, find me a list of things, fetch all the papers for me to read / review. On some things, kind of neat. On others, not just kind of bad, really bad.

This is an insane detail in this report on cheating! nymag.com/intelligence...
In the meantime, many schools have turned to surveillance.
Owen, a junior at Princeton
familiar with its Honor Committee, says the school often catches AI cheats by spying on internet use. Students' browsing histories are pulled from the campus network and scanned for recent visits to ChatGPT or Claude. If you whipped out your phone during a quiz, accessing a model on the building's Wi-Fi, you will likely be busted. While every case requires multiple pieces of evidence, and Princeton says it does not pull students' search histories unless they are already under investigation, Owen says the network logs have become critical in proving academic dishonesty. Every case he's been aware of lately has leaned on them.

A talk I need to write and give. Getting it on the calendar so I have a forcing function: AI is (mostly) Bullshit
Title: "AI is (mostly) bullshit"

Abstract: Machine Learning techniques are fabulous tools, allowing one to make a pattern matcher that (almost always) works. Large Language Models are one such application, taking the text of the input stream and creating a matching output stream of text. Unfortunately this text actually lacks semantics and is, in formal terms, bullshit: output without regard to whether or not it is actually true or not. Additionally, LLMs have a fundamental security flaw, an inability to distinguish between code and data. Taken together this means that most proposed LLM applications are colloquially bullshit: the technology can never actually work as advertised. So lets actually look at these systems, how they work both inside and outside the University, how they fail, and how they can be applied effectively without wasting trillions of dollars.

Key thing to understand about "remigration" is that it doesn't mean "send immigrants home." He's an immigrant, Peter Thiel is an immigrant, etc. It's not even a white nationalism project, it's a trans-Atlantic white continentalism project, nations themselves aren't important, only race matters.

And if the Democrats just say "we won" and ignore it, like Roe, the Republicans will eventually win.
