Join Ani King for the launch of their debut flash fiction collection, Family Night: Stories (Mason Jar Press). Preorders are available at https://masonjarpress.com/chapbooks-1/family-night.

FAMILY NIGHT is by turns a lyrical celebration of queerness and an exploration of family and loss, often through a lens of magical realism. Ani King’s collected flash fiction stories explore relationships and connections: a teen girl attempting to summon her missing mother home with cigarette smoke and yacht rock songs; two sisters disputing how to care for an unhealthy elderly unicorn; a woman accidentally raising two daughters from the bones of her long-dead pet rabbits.

Ani will be joined by emcee and guest reader Katherine Plumhoff, with additional guests Claudia Monpere, Dawn Tasaka Steffler, Allison Field Bell, and Elizabeth Deanna Morris Lakes. Come hang out with us and enjoy conversation, readings, and giveaways as we celebrate Family Night!

-- Please note we are only collecting your email in order to send the calendar invite and event link.

-- This event will also be recorded.

@fionamckay.bsky.social said some incredibly cool things about Family Night, but I’ll be forever the most pleased with “the best werewolf sex you’ll ever read.” Family Night (@masonjarpress.bsky.social) is available for preorder here: masonjarpress.com/chapbooks-1/...
Bright magenta background with the cover for Family Night taking up the right hand third. White text reads:

“FAMILY NIGHT is a vivid kaleidoscope of visceral detail that animates surreal stories of transformation, love, and grief. Family is slippery here, squirming from the reader’s damp, sweaty fingers: fathers are absent-present, mothers are sometimes-absent, sometimes-bloody. Grandmothers and aunts do the real work of parenting. We get lost in the intricacies of buildings that are mazes of the past, and mazes that are metaphors for love. There are awakenings. There is so much blue in sky and water. There are cars that shelter, cars that harm, and fire, fire, fire everywhere. And the best werewolf sex you’ll ever read.” — Fiona McKay, author of The Lives of the Dead

one of the greats by one of the greats: Brigit Pegeen Kelly’s “The Leaving”
The Leaving
My father said I could not do it, but all night I picked the peaches.
The orchard was still, the canals ran steadily.
I was a girl then, my chest its own walled garden.
How many ladders to gather an orchard?
I had only one and a long patience with lit hands and the looking of the stars which moved right through me the way the water moved through the canals with a voice that seemed to speak of this moonless gathering and those who had gathered before me.
I put the peaches in the pond's cold water, all night up the ladder and down, all night my hands twisting fruit as if I were entering a thousand doors, all night my back a straight road to the sky.
And then out of its own goodness, out of the far fields of the stars, the morning came, and inside me was the stillness a bell possesses just after it has been rung, before the metal begins to long again for the clapper's stroke.
The light came over the orchard.
The canals were silver and then were not, and the pond was—I could see as I laid the last peach in the water—full of fish and eyes.

I also really love this infographic we did. The magazine archive is a collaborative effort. We've scanned thousands of magazines, but we're also relying on years of scanning work by the community and partnerships with the industry. It takes a village!
30% of our magazines were provided by Retromags. 33.4% were scanned by the Video Game History Foundation. Magazine publishers and staff provided another 10.8%. In declining order, other contributor groups are "Various Internet Archive users," CGW Museum, Out-of-Print Archive, and other community groups.
