👇 This is necessary reading - about the closing of one particular program, but giving insights into the bigger war on education:
Starting with the last claim first, about “financial return,” closing the department will supposedly save Virginia Tech $121,185 per annum—barely a rounding error in an institutional operating budget of $2.5 billion. The neoliberal university may function like a corporation, but budgets are always moral documents that demonstrate what an institution values. So, if we’re talking about such a small portion (0.004%) of the budget, and yet “financial return on investment” was supposedly a driving factor in the decision, then we have to ask about those institutional values. Or, to put it another way, it’s fair to ask what Virginia Tech received for its $121,185.

They argue for these social changes because they want them to happen, regardless of genetics. Despite their claims, biological evidence is in fact relatively unimportant to hereditarians. This is why they are so uninterested in genuinely understanding the complexities of human genetics & evolution.

US scientists: Going into fall 26, how are you thinking about things? Following Fall 24 events and a tumultuous spring 25, I remember a convo with a colleague in which we agreed we just needed to wait things out until fall 25 and we'd have some clarity about the landscape (eg for funding). /1

Exceptional clarity from Science magazine but we need to take this one step further. Their design to break academic science is coupled with their design to re-segregate higher education and control culture, ideas, and memory. It fits with anti-DEI policies and Trump disclaimers at the Smithsonian.
The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

This is a blunt assessment of what the Trump regime is proposing for US science: they plan to take all the funding, essentially collapsing university-based research, in order to give that money to themselves, and they are lying about it.

I contributed to @science.org's "American Science at 250": I shared that "In 1776, I would not have been a tenured professor at any university in the US...At that time, I would have endured the same fate as my ancestors: I would have been someone’s property." Link: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Screenshot with text that reads: "In 1776, I would not have been a tenured professor at any university in the US. As a Black woman, a formal education would have been beyond my reach legally. At that time, I would have endured the same fate as my ancestors: I would have been someone’s property. Despite a lack of recognition of their full humanity, African Americans of this era were accomplished scientists and agriculturalists. (Carver, for example, was born enslaved—a fact many fail to recall.)"
