I mentioned the other day that for the Mesopotamian rpg I was writing up Plato's Allegory of the Cave (from REPUBLIC) as if it had been written by the Iron Age predecessor of Lovecrafts' Abd al-Hazred. I did. Here it is, in a four-part post. Notes: Rúgúzid is the Iron Age al-Hazred;
2282. Near the end of this year, Rugúzid finished what he believed would be his last and greatest work. He had spent the previous fourteen months in deep thought, usually writing only a sentence or two every day and always following up by double- and triple-checking everything in the sentence or sentences, including the placement and appropriateness of the punctuation marks. When he had at last completed the essay and was satisfied that it said everything it needed to say as clearly as possible and in just the right words, he leaves his apartment, walks across Babilim to the headquarters of the Nam Abgal, and orders the scribes working there to make copies of the essay—dozens of them, on papyrus and linen scrolls, on clay and stone tablets, on wax writing boards, on moving stone tablets, and on every other material and item which the other Nam Abgal members preferred to read from. When the scribes have finished, Rugúzid paid the Nam Abgal couriers to bring one copy of the essay to each member of the Nam Abgal with haste, no matter how far away their homes were.
What he had written bore the title On Shadows, Forms, and Perfect Forms. For a few years, it was the most powerful thing Rugúzid had ever written. It had the effect of a thunderbolt, or shower of thunderbolts, on the members of the Nam Abgal, who were variously nonplussed, disconcerted, amazed, bewildered, or deeply, deeply impressed—but none doubted the truth of what he had written.
The most important passage of On Shadows was the
following:

Imagine a group of mortals—humans and other intelligent folk, like anthrōpotauroi and kéntauroi and brazen folk—living in an underground cave-like dwelling, with an entrance a long way up, which is both open to the light and as wide as the cave itself. They’ve been there since childhood, fixed in the same place, with their necks and legs fettered, able to see only in front of them, because their bonds prevent them from turning their heads around. Light is provided by a fire burning far above and behind them. Also behind them, but on higher ground, there is a path stretching between them and the fire. Imagine that along this path a low wall has been built, like the screen in front of puppeteers above which they show their puppets.

Then also imagine that there are some other group of mortals along the wall, carrying all kinds of artifacts that project above it—statues of various intelligent folk and of various animals, made of stone, wood, iron, and every other material. And, as you’d expect, some of the carriers are talking, and some are silent.

Would the prisoners see anything of themselves and each other besides the shadows that the fire casts on the wall in front of them?
No, they couldn’t—their heads are motionless because of their bonds. Likewise with the things being carried along the wall.

If they could talk to each other, they would all believe that the words they use to name the shadows were correctly applied to those shadows. And if the cave had echoes from the wall in front of the prisoners, the prisoners would believe that it was the shadows passing in front of them that were talking.

In all, the prisoners would believe that the shadows they were seeing were the entirety of those beings—that the truth lay in those shadows.

Now, imagine how the prisoners would feel if they were rescued, released from their bonds and cured of their ignorance by being shown the figures and things casting the shadows. When one of the prisoners was suddenly rescued and stood up, walked forward, and turned his head so that he could see the source of the light—his reaction to seeing the things whose shadows he’d previously been seeing would not be relief. He would be dazzled, yes, but also dizzied, discomforted, unstable, uncertain, and painfully vulnerable.

What do you think that prisoner would say if they were told that everything they’d seen while bound and fettered, all of the shadows that he believed were the reality, were all
inconsequential? What would the prisoner feel, what would they say, if they were told that they saw only falsities before, but now they are seeing correctly—now they are seeing the truth? If we pointed in the direction of each of the figures passing by and asked the prisoner what each of them were, and to name each of them, what would the prisoner say?

The prisoner would be puzzled and disoriented and at a loss and would eventually say that the shadows they had spent their life seeing were the truth and the reality, and the figures passing by were just lies and illusions. And if the prisoner were made to look at the firelight itself, its light would hurt their eyes, and they would flee from those who freed them and run toward the shadows, believing that they are the truth and that they will save them.

And if the prisoner were grabbed by their rescuers and dragged out of the cave, up the rough, stone path and into the open air and the sunlight, how would the prisoner react? They would be angry at having been grabbed and dragged against their will, they would be nearly blinded by the light of the sun, they would be dizzied by the wind and the many new smells they were experiencing—and they would not be able to recognize that everything they were seeing and experiencing were real and true.

After some time, the former prisoner would still see shadows, but they would have adjusted to their new circumstances

The Hearth (1/21) A sapphic horror comic about witchcraft and hunger in the dead of winter.
An illustrated cover for a short comic called The Hearth by lainey williams. A cabin sits in a clearing in a snowy forest. The small windows in the log cabin are lit yellow and there is a trail of blood through the snow leading to the door. Smoke rises from the cabin’s chimney to surround the title. On either side of the smoke are illustrations in the style of Karelian embroidery, showing stylized geometric patterns in red thread. On the left side embroidery section, there is a depiction of a woman kneeling. her hands are stained red and she wears a headscarf. Opposite her is a woman standing. Instead of a left arm she has a wing. Over the top of the image, two geese shaded in red fly over the cabin and smoke. The trees all around the cabin are shaded in dark blue.

Meet my comic THE TITAN! Looking for a romance that lovingly takes the piss out of the action thriller genre? Or how about a post-apocalyptic world grounded in reality? Or what about a stealth, straight, middle-age trans male MC? I gotchu covered: titancomic.net #MeetTheWebcomic #ComixCleric
Comic chapter cover with Ansel and Ren in bath towels, walking away from each other. Ren is hunched over self-consciously and blushing while Ansel strides away with confidence. Text blurbs are scattered around the image: "T 4 C transhet" "shared trauma" "post-apocalypse if it were just boring and funny". One points to Ren and says "smol bean secretly an insatiable adrenaline junkie" and another points to Ansel saying "California's most dangerous man secretly just very tired". A final blurb points to them both and says "both not so secretly into each other".Ansel and Ren walk down a street in the late afternoon, heading back to their motel room.
Ren: What the hell was that anyways? You wasted that guy like he was nothing!
Ansel: He was nothing.
Ren: I wasn't even in any real danger.
Ansel: It sure looked like danger to me!
Ren: I couldda just slugged him in his stupid face but go on, Slab McChuckRoast.
Ansel: Is that a reference I'm supposed to get?
Ren: No. So let me get this straight. Twenty minutes ago you were drying my tears and then you... do this.
Ren's next line catches him off-guard. He frowns and blushes.
Ren: Did you have some wiggles to get out or is big bad Dune finally warmin' up to me?
Ansel: I contain multitides.
Ansel: You ready to hit the baths now or what? I'm pretty ripe and I'd like to wash this blood off.
Ansel: That shit corrodes, you know. And it's probably full of hepatitis too.
Ren: Shit, baths? Like bathtub baths?Comic page with three panels. In the first panel, a farm truck has lost control and has careened right through a guardrail on the side of the highway. There's a slope on the other side, not too steep. The driver inside the cab is yelling" Lord Jesus take the-!"
Inside the back of the truck, Ansel gathers up a panicking Ren as dates go flying around them.
Ren: Oh my god, we're going to die, aren't we?!
Ansel: We're not gonna die!
Ansel has secured Ren in his grip and holds his pistol between his teeth as he readies himself to jump out.Comic page with 5 panels. Ansel and Ren sit next to each other on the ground in the shadow of a large bush as they talk.
Ansel: Maybe it's better that way. You never wanna meet your heroes.
Ansel: 'Cause then you might find out they're like me.
Ren: Shut up. You're only half bad.
Ansel pretends to get mad at her.
Ansel: You're supposed to say not half bad.
Ren, quoting somebody: Honesty is the first chapter of the book of wisdom.
They pair bust up laughing.
Ansel: Oh fuck off.
They settled down and in the last panel Ansel is giving her a warm and maybe flirtatious look as Ren blushes and draws her shoulders up coyly. She lets out one last little "heh".
