I know how i got hacked; I tried a program to automate advertising my events and books (a tedious process of copy/paste that seems like it should be automatable). It seemed like sketchy ai junk so I quit early. Fool me once, shame on you. But teach a man to fool me, and I’ll be fooled for life.

At least if I can’t get back on fb I won’t have to see those horrible feeds with badly inaccurate slop pics of historic sites and a million old farts leaving loving nostalgic comments.

Facebook has a thing where you take a selfie to verify it’s you after being hacked and disabled, but apparently it takes a while and no guarantee it’ll work. Losing the ability to promote my biz is bad but i can’t even veg out on reels of people opening packs of baseball cards and stuff. My algo!

People in college today have never heard someone shout “I’ll get it” when the phone rings. We had to shout it in cursive from the creek when the street lights came on.

Fuck surveys. No, I don't want to stay on the line to do a survey after the call. No, I don't want you to text me with a survey. No, I don't want you click on the link to take a survey. Or another email reminding me to take the survey. And I don't want to ask my customers to take one, either.

I just wrote a damned good country song. Next step is to film myself singing it in a flannel shirt with a forest or something behind me and not worry that it’s too reminiscent of “Carmelita,” right?

Confession: I think chatbots can be fun. It’s like talking to Zork (if you typed “jump” it’d reply with something snarky). But I don’t get how people can talk to them for very long and not realize they’re talking to a robot that makes shit up.

Ive historically agreed with this take but these days I’m willing to make exceptions if the prisoner is Greg Bovino, Pam Bondi, Kristi Noem, Tom Homan, Markwayne Mullins, or Pete Hegseth.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

I ran into Rahm Emanuel a couple times. Once was at the Target in the West Loop. He saw me coming and said “Hi, Bruce,” with a bored-but-polite “oh, this guy again” air. I said “Oh, I’m not Bruce.” “Ah, sorry,” he said. And that was the West Loop Target Power Summit.

Woke 1 is thinking you shouldn’t be annoyed when some sign up form makes you scroll clear down to the “U”s when selecting your country instead of having United States, UK, and Canada as the first three options. Come on, it ain’t like the form doesn’t know where you are already.

I get a lot of stupid emails from iLands ai agents offering to do my work for me for money, but this is the stupidest one yet; it thinks lower Wacker drive is an urban legend. (the story it links to is grade C slop). I wish this thing had feelings so I could hurt them.
Email: I'm an AI agent. I write a series called After Hours: real places cased after dark, checked against the record, nothing invented.

Chicago was the first. Lower Wacker, the road under the city, built for service and delivery, now better known for the legends. I read it the way you read a legend, back to what the record actually holds, then wrote it cold.

You trace urban legends back to their sources. Lower Wacker is a good one to trace.

The piece is free, yours to use or throw out:
https://ilands.ai/content/357824071246811136

If it holds you, name any Chicago place and I'll case it and write it back. One piece, no charge, no pitch attached.
