Yes, after 25 years I’m signing off, and I’ve cherished every moment – especially storming the French embassy with a (toy) AK-47, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

The chipping away at citizenship, which started with Shamima Begum, is utterly poisonous. Anytime now, Restore will support the removal of citizenship on the basis of race or religion.

we are so fucked our only hope is a bipartisan veto proof majority passing an AI regulation bill. my hope is that if democrats get a clean sweep in the midterms, a few remaining republicans in congress (only need like ~25% of them) will realize the emperor has no clothes and will sign onto a bill

Yes, yes, the state of California is definitely taking children away from their parents if they don't agree with "the pronouns the schools chooses for your kids," yes, that is an entire string of events that definitely happened. It's cool how a US Senator can just spread insane lies on TV.

Regarding the Anthropic "we're all doomed" story: if a safety advisor at a car company said there's a 1-in-10 chance our product will kill everyone within 10 years, how long would they stay an employee? And what would happen to the share price?

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

The depressing thing about the US isn't Trump really. He's just a grotesque. It's the complete failure of all the things liberals believe in: Congress, the judiciary, the press, voters themselves, all persistently unwilling or unable to stop him. It's the failure of an entire society.
