This was one of the most disappointing things for me about the most recent Resident Evil movie. It was a great horror movie! But then they made the lead character effectively a laugh track for everything that was happening.

"The False Erinyes" By me Digital Collage and Digital Painting #art #collage #illustration
Digital collage of a theater stage. A wooden floor red curtains and a dark green backdrop with hints of foliage. On the stage a scene plays out. A boy made of paper hung on a red string weeps and cries as he is attacked by strange creatures. The creatures are paper birds, but their heads are scissors with gold handles. Bits of paper flutter down and one of the creatures has its "beak " scissor blades open about to snip the red thread.

A notable low point for me was having to explain scrupulosity and obsessional OCD … to my psychiatrist. (I got a new psychiatrist after that.)

As someone with OCD that isn’t like Monk’s I do sometimes find it frustrating 😆 Any conversation about my condition inevitably has to go through a “no, not like in the TV show” phase, even with medical professionals who really ought to know better.

Resident Evil was less a film adaptation of a Resident Evil game than it was a film adaptation of a Twitch stream of someone playing and commenting on a Resident Evil game. As effective and well-executed as the horror was, it was continually undercut by the self-aware motormouth commentary.

Yep! They are. It's all being labeled "Y2K" now but yeah, that's the fashion. It's a bit baffling to see high schoolers wearing something similar to what I would have worn in high school.

All the talk lately about AI cults is a good reminder that anyone can fall into a cult. The people in these AI cults all seem like the types who would be absolutely certain THEY would never fall for a cult, much less a religious one. And yet there they are in a religious cult.

Appeal to their poetic souls: imagine the agonizing unbearable romantic tension that will develop if you wait until December to date! The inspiration of yearning! It's also, like, four months. Just chill and wait.

I wouldn't hold them up as high literature and they're not all equally successful, but I do enjoy the stories in some of the cases in the Ace Attorney games. They're like a slapstick satire of Law & Order.

My college had that same curfew policy in 2001. The women were locked in their dorm after curfew, and at all times of day were not allowed to have male visitors beyond the dorm's lobby—where someone was on staff 24/7 to enforce this. This was at a Christian school with a "more liberal" reputation.

Republicans did a great job of convincing people to think of themselves as taxpayers (paying customers) than citizens. This plus the explosion of opinion versus news and the horse race versus issue coverage.

It’s the Dem translation now? When I was a kid, my very conservative denomination used it because it wasn’t the Catholic one (KJV) or the liberal one (ESV) or the new one (NLT) or the new Catholic one (NKJV). What do the evangelicals use now?

I thought the geysers were intentionally “bad” CGI. The film’s homage to horror movies explicitly includes not only the ‘80s heyday of practical effects but also the awkward early years of CGI. The geysers are as deliberate as the obvious matte backgrounds.

And failure of imagination on my part but I had never considered how someone with psychosis would navigate that AND the supernatural. It was an eye-opening idea to me but also just damn cool. Not seen it done before.

This is what makes Hello Sunshine so GOOD though! So many stories do this plot twist of “oh, it wasn’t supernatural, it was psychosis” or “it wasn’t psychosis, it was the supernatural” but HS is like, “You know it can be both, right?”

I do find it fascinating, though, that so much of the response to the film revolves around Kris as transgender or even as an authorial insert for the writer/director. I didn’t get the impression that either of those things were true.

As soon as I even heard about Camp Miasma, I wanted to read Jude Doyle’s response to it. It is here, and it is wonderful and vulnerable and incisive. Speaking as a trans person who is herself navigating the complexities of desire, I feel seen and understood by Jude’s reading of the movie.

One step closer to my ideal: hiding self-reposts. I understand that people repost their posts to hit different time zones and try to stand out in the deluge, but there are some people I've followed who repost themselves so frequently that they *become* the deluge.

I can’t think of any definitions of art writ-large, but with writing I always return to Faulkner’s speech about a human heart in conflict with itself being the only thing worth writing about (even when the human heart in a story is not human, as the case may be).

My understanding is that Alexander Pope’s translation is not especially accurate, but it is a fun read!
The man for wisdom’s various arts renown’d,
Long exercised in woes, O Muse! resound;
Who, when his arms had wrought the destined fall
Of sacred Troy, and razed her heaven-built wall,
Wandering from clime to clime, observant stray’d,
Their manners noted, and their states survey’d,
On stormy seas unnumber’d toils he bore,
Safe with his friends to gain his natal shore:
Vain toils! their impious folly dared to prey
On herds devoted to the god of day;
The god vindictive doom’d them never more
(Ah, men unbless’d!) to touch that natal shore.
Oh, snatch some portion of these acts from fate,
Celestial Muse! and to our world relate.

La Jetée! It does so much in a lean 28 minutes. Bonus points for every shot but one being still frames. Also notable for the American movie remake adding another 100 minutes, and the later TV show running four seasons, but both somehow feeling less epic.

She is holding a sword thrust through her own chest as she weeps.
