We subsidise landlords with housing benefit payments to the tune of £37B, and we continue to prop up insane house prices with this policy. Control rents, build social housing and empower councils and homeowners to socialise existing homes. We need to stop pumping state capital into private housing

The fight for the first rural council housing in England (in 1894) - led by FD Perrott, the 'Radical Vicar of Ixworth' and the Ixworth Agricultural Labourers’ Association. municipaldreams.substack.com/p/stow-road-...
Text: Under the shadow of the luxurious ‘Hall’, at the gate of the tenant-farmer’s comfortable homestead, the labourer (upon whose work both live) drags out a hard life, compelled with wife and children to find shelter and make ‘home’ under a roof beneath which neither squire nor farmer would stable their very cattle.

I take the view that its how the history is used that is more important than strict accuracy. If I want scholarship, ill read scholarship. Far more dangerous than historical fiction playing with the facts is the growing number of infotainment outlets seeking to use history for their own ends

I can believe that Streeting has the support of 80+ MPs, but I just don't see what his strategy is for winning over the Labour membership. Starmer's strategy was essentially subterfuge, which is more difficult for Streeting as an open party rightist but also as its been done before very recently.
