My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

Irony is dead
An event flyer for London Climate Action Week, titled "Extreme heat: Improving governance and strengthening action around the world," features a background photograph of a dry, arid landscape with a road and mountains under a hazy blue sky. At the top, logos for the "Climate Resilience Alliance" and "London Climate Action Week" are visible next to a red "EVENT" tag, while the bottom of the flyer lists the event details—scheduled for 24 June from 09:30-12:00 BST at the Shaw Library, London School of Economics and online—alongside partner logos including LSE Grantham Research Institute, IFRC, Mercy Corps, and Practical Action. Stamped boldly across the center of the image in large, dark red, capitalized letters is the ironic overlay text: "CANCELLED DUE TO EXTREME HEAT."

It feels strange that humanity dreams of finding life on distant planets while forests here vanish every day. A forest takes decades to grow, to cool the air, protect wildlife, and create peace—yet only moments to destroy. The most important world is the one we already inhabit.

Intelligent
2 Blue Jays conversing in a spruce. First Jay asks "What if we aren't the only intelligent species in the universe? What would they be like?" The second replies "Let's see... they'd need to be good at problem solving, and to have advanced communication skills, a social structure, self-awareness..." "... the ability to fly?" continues the first Jay. "That goes without saying!" exclaims the second. The first states confidently "And a strong beak, of course". To which the second responds rhetorically "How could you do anything intelligent without a strong beak?"

The “Calvin’s dad explains two types” meme, inspired by a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon.

Clockwise from top left:
1) Calvin’s dad walks into frame to find Calvin trying to operate a record player. The dad says: “There are only two industries left in America: gambling, and fraud.”

2) The dad shows where the record goes, and how to turn on the player, while Calvin watches. Dad says “Derivatives? Gambling. AI? Fraud. Video games? Gambling. Social media? Fraud.” Calvin says “yeah”.

3) With one hand open palm up, Calvin’s dad cheerfully explains to Calvin out of frame below him, “The stock market looks like gambling, but it’s actually fraud.”

4) In bed in a dark room, Calvin clutches at his pillow, eyes wide in existential terror. There is no text in the panel.

Emissions from powering future UK data centres, MtCO2, under different scenarios. The UK government figure is based on a modelled estimate for total AI-related data-centre computing power in 2035. The blue bars combine the government capacity figure of 11.2GW with increasing shares of gas power. The red bars use the Ofgem estimate of 20GW of “mature” projects that may be built in the future, combined with existing capacity of 1.8GW, to reach a figure of 21.8GW. This is the dumbest fucking thing. First, climate change will destroy humans way before the Sun destroys the Earth. Second, when the Sun explodes in a few billion years, it'll wipe out Mars as well.
"Eventually, all life on Earth will be destroyed by the sun," he told Fox News last month. "The sun is gradually expanding, and so we do at some point need to be a multi-planet civilization, because Earth will be incinerated."

This is why, 23 years ago, Mr. Musk resolved to go to Mars…
