I think that Dolly Parton was, for a lot of people, an ambassador of the "good" values people think of about the South: kindness, hospitality, can-do spirit, sharp and witty and down to earth. I think for a segment of people, too, she was theantithesis of a lot of noxious masculine country stuff.

Morning mushroom walk.
An indigo milky mushroom (bluish-grey, gills pointing up) against a backdrop of green stilt grass with dead leaves in the foreground. Two amanita mushrooms. The one in the back is more open. The one in the front is mostly cap. A little brown mushroom has pushed a piece of bark off of the rotting log as it grows through. Orange jack-o'lantern mushrooms growing on a downed oak tree.

Remember: School may start today, but that does not mean that summer is over. It's not "fall y'all" or pumpkin spice season until Sept. 23rd. Continue to swim in the pool, splash in the creek, pick wildflowers, catch lightning bugs, eat peaches, and make the most of those evenings and weekends.
