I'll say that one of my issues with adobe (probably not as important to most folks) is I hate their UI. I looked at the printcraft screenshot and it looks just like acrobat. Acrobat is horrible to use. While I don't think this project is...

Language barriers and national cultures are important, but they look tiny next to the deep cultural divide that separates LaTeX users from normal humans.

I must confess that when I'm walking down the sidewalk where I live I often encounter people speeding down the sidewalk on ebikes and electric scooters. I have yet to encounter someone on and ATV. I think we lack social norms about where and how these bike and scooters should be used.

In general everything is a struggle. And if we give up on our side then the other side will make progress. Or more progress. Just because you have lost something doesn't mean you should concede defeat. You have to keep up the struggle. And you must do so assuming the other side will as well.

This may sound good theoretically. But if my kids school wants to start at 9 instead of 8 then the employers of the parents for every kid who goes to that school also must change when their employees have to come to work. Then the people who deal with those companies also have to shift.

Another reason publishers may want your email is AI scraping. From listening to the @404media.co podcast. They ask folks to get email links for their free reporting because it was the only way to stop the AI companies from scraping their content because these companies do understand consent.

Local inference (running LLMs on your local machine) is getting pretty cheap and it works really well. We will eventually be able to run open weights models (models that have been trained on the frontier models and have comparable abilities) in our house. They may not be the best..

New — I wrote about this weird thing where people within the Republican party keep being exposed as Nazis and the party then tries to claim each one is an aberration. The facts, as I lay out here, indicate otherwise:

Republicans don’t have a Nazi problem—they are the Nazi problem
A spate of recent revelations have shown the ideologies and their adherents are one and the same.

I feel like people are focusing on the extinction thing too much. I saw someone say: Even if it causes a nuclear exchange that is unlike to lead to extinction. I think that starting a nuclear war is pretty damn bad. Extinction shouldn't be the threshold for concern. It should be much much lower.

I think it's important to note that Silicon Valley here refers to the billionaires who control it and not the people that live there. If you see below the democrats have consistently wont the elections in that congressional district.
Table from this wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California%27s_17th_congressional_district

Showing that democrats pretty decisively win every election in the congressional district that contains silicon valley.

It me! I was making the biologicals! The weapons! Truthfully, I use AI to develop tools to help with drug discovery. When I tried to use Fable it kept telling me "something something biological something reverting back to Opus" so I'm assuming that I represent one or more of these efforts.
In a report describing misuses of its A.I. models, Anthropic said it could not determine whether the research served a legitimate or nefarious purpose because valid biological inquiry — the kind that can lead to breakthroughs like vaccines — can also help engineer dangerous pathogens. In the face of that uncertainty, Anthropic said it erred on the side of caution because the consequences of missing malicious activity could be severe.

You can get these people on board for discrete policy items like pesticide bans maybe, but they are animated by a belief that if everyone just followed their elaborate health mythology, we'd all be cured and live forever. And the fact that someone isn't and is sick? Their fault.
