John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 17hTo some degree this will work. One-off or two-off experiences. But if we want something thorough, systematic, nuanced, etc. We have to find a way to pay for that. It's not just reviews though. Any kind of content that is currently ad supported will have to be paid for in some way. 200
John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 18hAn example that comes to mind are people who actually review products. Like consumer-reports style. 110
John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 18hIt's not just news orgs but random websites that generate actual content. This has been soap box that @reckless.bsky.social has been standing on for a while. The concept is that google zero will completely remove any financial incentives folks have to do things like actual product reviews. 110

John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 07/10/2026specifically is a longterm threat to Adobe (for the reasons Ed mentions), it does speak to how LLMs can be used to create competitive products. There are now so many avenues for competition against these companies trying to extract every dollar from their customers with subscriptions. 100
John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 07/10/2026I'll say that one of my issues with adobe (probably not as important to most folks) is I hate their UI. I looked at the printcraft screenshot and it looks just like acrobat. Acrobat is horrible to use. While I don't think this project is... 100

John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 05/10/2026I must confess that when I'm walking down the sidewalk where I live I often encounter people speeding down the sidewalk on ebikes and electric scooters. I have yet to encounter someone on and ATV. I think we lack social norms about where and how these bike and scooters should be used. 110
John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 04/10/2026In general everything is a struggle. And if we give up on our side then the other side will make progress. Or more progress. Just because you have lost something doesn't mean you should concede defeat. You have to keep up the struggle. And you must do so assuming the other side will as well. 030
John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 03/10/2026At that point you have effectively the same result that you would have achieved if you just changed the clocks by one hour. 000
John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 03/10/2026This may sound good theoretically. But if my kids school wants to start at 9 instead of 8 then the employers of the parents for every kid who goes to that school also must change when their employees have to come to work. Then the people who deal with those companies also have to shift. 110

John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 01/10/2026A general guideline for life that works Online: If it gives you immediate gratification then it's probably not something you should do often. John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 01/10/2026Another reason publishers may want your email is AI scraping. From listening to the @404media.co podcast. They ask folks to get email links for their free reporting because it was the only way to stop the AI companies from scraping their content because these companies do understand consent. 001

John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 28/09/2026I agree you don't need great hardware. I'm thinking about a not so distant future where people with limited technical skill can do this at home. I can see someone selling a box that connects to someones wifi network and "just works". 101
John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 28/09/2026But they are pretty damn good. Hardware is expensive now, but in a couple years when you can run basically Opus or Sol in your house, it will be difficult for Anthropic or Open AI to compete with that. It's like the frontier labs didn't plan for or even consider commodification of their products. 221
John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 28/09/2026Local inference (running LLMs on your local machine) is getting pretty cheap and it works really well. We will eventually be able to run open weights models (models that have been trained on the frontier models and have comparable abilities) in our house. They may not be the best.. 142

John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 26/09/2026I'll take the other end of this. Whenever I interview someone who is young I encourage them to ask for more money if they are given an offer. I tell them that if they get an offer and ask for more money the worst real outcome is that HR says no. I've had a couple tell me they were successful. 140

John Harrold @abumirchi.com · 25/09/2026I think it's because fundamentally people who use R tend to be more outcome based. Like we enjoy programming but we really enjoy the outputs of programming.
