I use Amtrak flex tickets all the time, very little extra $ for the flexibility.
Only NOW did I have the had the idea to book a flex ticket on a second train 30-60 min later, as insurance in case the subway is delayed and I miss the first train.
*Poof*.. no more stress catching Amtrak.
