BIG NEWS: Up to 75% of global energy demand could be electrified by 2050 with technologies we already have. Progress is slow and the barriers are mostly political and institutional. Today we launch the Oxford Martin Electrification Accelerator to change that. oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/electrification

Whenever I write something about a railway under performing, I get people - usually from Great Britain - whingeing at me that their railway is worse. Not only is it not necessarily true, but it is also tiring. So I wrote about it! jonworth.eu/my-train-is-ev…

"My train is even worse than your train!" and why that is quite tiring, especially from people from Great Britain
Yesterday I was looking at the ticket cost and regularity of service of the ex-Thalys, now Eurostar, Bruxelles - Paris service. In terms of the speed of the service and the quality of the infrastructure, this route is excellent - more than 90% of the trip is on high speed lines

Hate to break it to you, but fossil fuel extraction dwarfs that required for the clean energy sector.
In 2025, 15 BILLION tons of coal, oil & gas were extracted, shipped and burned once.

By contrast, just 30 MILLION tons of critical minerals were used by the global clean energy sector [cite: uploaded:Renewables vs. Fossil Fuels: Mining]

THE FOSSIL FUEL-BASED ENERGY ARCHITECTURE REQUIRES EXTRACTING
300 TIMES MORE PHYSICAL MASS FROM THE EARTH TO DELIVER THE SAME AMOUNT OF USEFUL ENERGY OVER A 20-YEAR LIFESPAN AS RENEWABLES

We had the same issue with freezers in R&D labs - including ultra low temp (ULT) freezers. ULT freezers were historically kept at -80°C, but this could be changed to -70°C without any compromise on the research, and likewise would’ve achieved sig energy & cost savings.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (
