An Aussie trying to convince our politicians to model a simpler & more effective tax for Australia, invented by a mining engineer & two chartered accountants back in the 80s after hearing about the National Party's 15% flat tax idea. #abtax Sydney Aus

What happens to Australian politicians, public servants and the military when they arrive in the USA? They lose all sense of Australian sovereignty and acquiesce to US hegemony at the expense of our safety. We need real leadership not sycophantic capitulation.

We can't expect to have an UBI for a jobless AI world unless we have a taxation system that captures the profits of digital businesses.
anthony.zacharzewski.eu
No AI UBI without AI taxation
Stephen Bush has a good piece in today's FT, pointing out that the state pension is a form of live test of a UBI, a universal basic income. Pensioners don't just sit around and do nothing, for the most part. Some continue to work, some do local volunteering, some travel. It's an important issue, he points out, because a UBI is one of the solutions for a world where AI and advanced robotics have destroyed an enormous number of jobs, without replacing many of them.

Slop. My @smh @theage cartoon.
Single frame. Title - instruction: “[place cartoon here - ed]”. Appearance of yellow torn out lined note paper held in place by sticky tape. Text: “The Herald-Sun has this week published an AI cartoon, where previously they might have commissioned one of their (dwindling) stable of artists. And it makes sense. (Not the cartoon.) After all, what is a cartoon, but a picture with a caption and maybe some helpful labels to make a point? In this case, a point the editor who prompted it wanted to make.
I mean, how hard can cartooning be? We would all be doing them if it weren’t for our lack of drawing skill (and some cartoonists aren’t very skilled, let’s face it), and AI means nobody has to pay the outrageous fees that “artists” charge, while they can “borrow” their existing work to train AI. It’s literally a no-brainer!” (Small picture of a brain crossed out) “We can only hope they can keep up the quality, once the AI can only be trained using other AI cartoons.”

Single frame. Albo at a desk in a dark room with “OFFICE OF AI” on door, hunched up looking at laptop, says, “How do I deal with AI?” Response in computer speech comes: “That’s a great question, Anthony! I can see you really want to do the smart thing in spite of all the risks, climate implications and likely human cost.
