This morning, on 34th Street near Herald Square, a dump-truck driver hit and killed a New Yorker on a bike. The victim was a delivery worker riding a JOCO rental e-bike, a low-speed pedal-assist bike. The truck driver fled the scene.

Even outside of Manhattan, congestion pricing has created opportunities like this one in western Queens, where there are fewer cars on the road. DOT should proactively find other streets where public space might be reclaimed for people, and act with haste to redesign them.

This awful story of two high school girls killed by a truck driver who failed to yield and turned into them is awful. Worse is reporting emphasizing they were riding two on an electric citibike- as if a single kid on a traditional bike would’ve had any different outcome. This story gets it right.
